Line 11:

* An Axe to Grind
* Badass Beard/Beard of Barbarism: A truly glorious one.
* The Berserker
* Blood Knight: Believes in the glory of battle.
* Buffy-Speak
* Companion Cube: His Axe.

* Everything's Better Withwith Spinning/Spin Attack: Counter Helix
* Finishing Move: Culling Blade will kill any hero below a certain amount of health.
* Glowing Eyes of Doom: In the trailer at least. Dead link
* I Call It Vera: He calls his axe...um...Axe.
* Monochromatic Eyes
* One-Hit Kill: Culling Blade can instantly kill an enemy unit with low health based on its current level's threshold.
* One-Man Army: Believes himself to be this.
* Practical Taunt: His magical taunt forces enemies to attack him for a few seconds and leave his allies alone.
* Proud Warrior Race Guy
Line 39:
"In the Fields of Endless Carnage, far to the south of Quoidge, a corpulent figure works tirelessly through the night--dismembering, disembowelling, piling up the limbs and viscera of the fallen that the battlefield might be clear by dawn. In this cursed realm, nothing can decay or decompose; no corpse may ever return to the earth from which it sprang, no matter how deep you dig the grave. Flocked by carrion birds who need him to cut their meals into beak-sized chunks, Pudge the Butcher hones his skills with blades that grow sharper the longer he uses them. Swish, swish, thunk. Flesh falls from the bone; tendons and ligaments part like wet paper. And while he always had a taste for the butchery, over the ages, Pudge has developed a taste for its byproduct as well. Starting with a gobbet of muscle here, a sip of blood there...before long he was thrusting his jaws deep into the toughest of torsos, like a dog gnawing at rags. Even those who are beyond fearing the Reaper, fear the Butcher."

* Cast Fromfrom Hit Points: Rot damages Pudge himself as well.
* Damage Sponge: One of Pudge's skills slowly increases his Strength stat each time he kills an enemy. A well-played Pudge can therefore end up with a preposterous hitpoint total before long.
* Difficult but Awesome: Pudge is a Mighty Glacier with mostly close-range skills and coded to be unable to use Blink Dagger for Dynamic Entry. To make good use of him, one must master Meat Hook, which newbies are liable to snag on mooks instead. An experienced player, though, can catch his victim through gaps in the mook line or even the Fog of War, dragging them into traps and thus being a valuable supporter.
Line 45:
* Fat Bastard: Possibly as a result of his cannibalism.
* Flesh Golem
* Glass Cannon: Despite his raw hp values and deadliness against single enemies, he is very vulnerable until lategame: his armor score is really poor, and Cast Fromfrom Hit Points skill drains the health very fast even when he's stunned.
* Hey, It's That Voice!: Snipin'...err, butcherin's a good job, mate.
* Hooks and Crooks/Knife Nut: He uses a butcher's knife in one hand and a meat hook in the other.
* I'm a Humanitarian: Pudge started off as a simple butcher, but eventually developed a taste for flesh, human or otherwise.
Line 54:
* Obvious Rule Patch: DotA has an item called "Kelen's Dagger" (Blink Dagger in DotA 2) that allows teleportation of one's own hero. So, it's even possible to teleport yourself into terrain that you cannot escape from, except by using Blink Dagger again once the cooldown ends. The Blink Dagger cannot be held by Pudge or Vengeful Spirit. If it could be, they would be able to blink to an enclosed area and then bring an enemy to them, leaving their foe potentially trapped. However, they can still do this with Force Staff.
* Shout-Out: To a Diablo character and to a Mortal Kombat character.

* Surprisingly-Sudden Death: His modus operandi is to pull a single enemy into the Fog of War away from friendlies, then disable and kill them in a matter of seconds.
Line 83:
* Glowing Eyes of Doom
* Hellfire: Scorched Earth
* Hell Onon Earth: Scorched Earth
* Names to Run Away From Really Fast
* Noun Verber
* Oddly-Shaped Sword
* Our Demons Are Different
* Shout-Out: Aside from being based on the Biblical Lucifer, he also has references to Final Fantasy like the "oddly" named LVL? Death.
* Whole-Plot Reference: Does his Backstory seem familiar? It should.
* Wings Do Nothing: He has wings in the original DotA. Averted in Dota 2 where it was even described in his Backstory as only smoking stumps remaining.

Line 100:
* Body Horror: Not only does he look nasty himself, but his ultimate, Infest, involves him burrowing into the target and lying dormant. At any point, N'aix may jump out, killing his host instantly if they are a creep.
* Cannibalism Superpower: His second skill, Feast.
* Chained Byby Fashion: In addition to the symbolism of not being truly free.
* Chest Burster: He can burst out of a unit through Consume after infesting it and the icon for the skill even resembles the ones from Alien.
* Evil Is Visceral
Line 108:
* I'm a Humanitarian
* More Teeth Than the Osmond Family: Just look at him.
* NoWon't SellWork On Me: His Rage ability, becoming completely immune to magic.
* Noun Verber
* Unstoppable Rage: His Rage ability, wherein he becomes immune to magic and gains increased attack speed for a few seconds.
Line 121:
* Baleful Polymorph: Subverted. This was the intention of the spell which made him a lycanthrope, but he used it instead to kill a number of his captors. He has since accepted and embraced his feral nature.
* Big Badass Wolf
* Everything's Worse Withwith Wolves
* Familiar: His summoned wolves.
* Husky Russkie: Invoked with his voice actor's Fake Russian accent.
Line 128:
* Natural Weapon: His claws in wolf form. He does appear to have claws in human form, but doesn't use them.
* Our Werewolves Are Different: Almost entirely wolf when in wolf form. Appears to have burning embers on his mane.
* Shout-Out: To the Twilight fandom.

* Summon Magic: Summon Wolves
* Super Mode: Shapeshift
* Unishment: He was cursed to become a wolf to kill his father but it has Gone Horribly Right and he turned against his handlers.
* Voluntary Shapeshifting: His ultimate, Shapeshift.
* Wolverine Claws: His means of attack when not in wolf form.
Line 144:
* Casting a Shadow: His ultimate skill Darkness.
* Dark Is Evil
* Glowing Eyes of Doom: Dead link
* Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Crippling Fear causes the victim to have a chance to miss.
* Lightning Bruiser: Hunter in the Night gives him dramatic movement and attack speed boosts.
Line 150:
* Noun Verber
* Power Nullifier: Crippling Fear disables the victim's spellcasting temporarily.
* Weakened Byby the Light: He is weakened during the day and stronger at night.
* Wings Do Nothing: Although in the trailer, he appears to be gliding with them.

Line 158:
"The sands of the Scintillant Waste are alive and sentient--the whole vast desert speaks to itself, thinking thoughts only such a vastness can conceive. But when it needs must find a form to communicate with those of more limited scope, it frees a fragment of itself, and fills a carapace of magic armor formed by the cunning Djinn of Qaldin. This essential identity calls itself Crixalis, meaning 'Soul of the Sand,' but others know it as Sandking. Sandking takes the form of a huge arachnid, inspired by the Scintillant Waste's small but ubiquitous denizens; and this is a true outward expression of his ferocious nature. Guardian, warrior, ambassador--Sandking is all of these things, inseparable from the endless desert that gave him life."

* Big Creepy -Crawlies
* Beware My Stinger Tail
* Blue and Orange Morality: As the physical manifestation of a sentient desert, he as a negative view towards greenery and vegetation.
Line 166:
* Fast Tunnelling: Burrowstrike

* Our Genies Are Different: The Djinn of Qaldin mentioned in his Backstory.

* Quicksand Sucks: Epicenter, which damages and slows enemies. From its description...

* Scary Scorpions
* Shout-Out: To The Scorpion King.
Line 182:

* Authority Equals Asskicking
* Back Fromfrom the Dead/Came Back Wrong
* Badass Cape: A torn one.
* BFS
* Curse Cut Short

* Cursed Withwith Awesome
* Dem Bones
* Evil Overlord
* Fireball Eyeballs
* For Massive Damage
* Glowing Eyelights of Un-DeathUndeath
* Hellfire: Hellfire Blast
* Like a Badass Out of Hell: Ostarion calls on his hellish lineage when casting Hellfire Blast.
Line 210:

* Alluring Anglerfish: His model in Dota 2 is based on this fish.

* Arch Enemy: It isn't mentioned at all in his backstory, but his Amplify Damage lines suggest he really hates Riki.
* Armor-Piercing Attack: Amplify Damage reduces armour.
Line 226:
* Stun Guns: Bash and Slithereen Crush.
* Super-Persistent Predator: Slardar is known for never letting thieves escape. Ever. No matter how far he may have to chase them.

Line 253:
* Arch Enemy: He and Kunkka hate each other's guts. Taken Up to Eleven by Tidehunter in which his responses for killing rivals are almost all about Kunkka, even though he killed someone else.
* Fish People
* Impaled Withwith Extreme Prejudice: Happens to enemy units hit by Ravage through tentacles.
* Making a Splash: His Gush spell especially.
* Mighty Glacier: With Kraken Shell, he becomes very tough to kill.
Line 260:
* Revenge: For unknown reasons, Leviathan has made it his mission in life to kill Admiral Kunkka.
* Serial Escalation: His responses for gaining levels which are about him wanting to eat something, beginning with a plankton and ending with a plesiosaur.

* You Kill It, You Bought It: With the Kraken Shell.

Line 286:
* Super Senses: Not only that he can sense bleeding enemy heroes, he can also share their vision.
* The Unpronounceable: His name. Fan theories as to how Icefrog came up with the name range from the influence of drugs to Icefrog just rolling his face on the keyboard.
** Another theory is that is was derived from Strigoi, a creature from Romanian mythology. Some Strigoi are said to have vampiric properties or simply drink blood, hence fitting the Bloodseeker.
* Vampiric Draining: His motivation is to obtain blood sacrifices for his gods.

Line 296:
* The Archer
* The Archmage: Sutherex, who inadvertently made Clinkz a monster.
* Arrows Onon Fire
* Back Fromfrom the Dead/Came Back Wrong
* Ballistic Bone: They don't call him the Bone Fletcher for nothing.
* Dem Bones
Line 304:
* The Magocracy: The government Clinkz once served.
* Meaningful Name

* Wreathed in Flames

Line 312:
"For centuries, Black Arachnia the Broodmother lurked in the dark lava tubes beneath the smoldering caldera of Mount Pyrotheos, raising millions of spiderlings in safety before sending them to find prey in the wide world above. In a later age, the Vizier of Greed, Ptholopthales, erected his lodestone ziggurat on the slopes of the dead volcano, knowing that any looters who sought his magnetic wealth must survive the spider-haunted passages. After millennia of maternal peace, Black Arachnia found herself beset by a steady trickle of furfeet and cutpurses, bold knights and noble youths--all of them delicious, certainly, and yet tending to create a less than nurturing environment for her innocent offspring. Tiring of the intrusions, she paid a visit to Ptholopthales; and when he proved unwilling to discuss a compromise, she wrapped the Vizier in silk and set him aside to be the centerpiece of a special birthday feast. Unfortunately, the absence of the Magnetic Ziggurat's master merely emboldened a new generation of intruders. When one of her newborns was trodden underfoot by a clumsy adventurer, she reached the end of her silken rope. Broodmother headed for the surface, declaring her intent to rid the world of each and every possible invader, down to the last Hero if necessary, until she could ensure her nursery might once more be a safe and wholesome environment for her precious spiderspawn."

* Big Creepy -Crawlies
* Chest Burster: Targets killed by her first skill will have Spiderlings spawned from them. Furthermore, units killed by Spiderlings will have Spiderites born from them.
* Cobweb Jungle: Spin Web can create a large web (in comparison to most of the units) in an area.
* Hey, It's That Voice!: Since when did GLaDOS and the administrator become a spider?
* Horror Hunger: Insatiable Hunger
* Giant Spider: Quite obviously.
Line 321:
* Mother of a Thousand Young
* Shout-Out: Shares a name with Blackarachnia from Beast Wars. Unsurprisingly, her beast form was a spider.
** She also has a quote from CharlottesCharlotte's Web:

Line 332:
* The Blank/Eyeless Face/Nightmare Face
* Carry a Big Stick

* Cthulhumanoid: He used to look like one in DotA, when he had the model of the Faceless Ones. Unsurprisingly, they were creatures created by Eldritch Abominations who were essentially Lovecraft expies.
* Dynamic Entry: Time Walk.
Line 399:
"Just as higher states of energy seek a lower level, the Spectre known as Mercurial is a being of intense and violent energy who finds herself irresistibly drawn to scenes of strife as they unfold in the physical world. While her normal spectral state transcends sensory limitations, each time she takes on a physical manifestation, she is stricken by a loss of self--though not of purpose. In the clash of combat, her identity shatters and reconfigures, and she begins to regain awareness. She grasps that she is Mercurial the Spectre--and that all of her Haunts are but shadows of the one true Spectre. Focus comes in the struggle for survival; her true mind reasserts itself; until in the final moments of victory or defeat, she transcends matter and is restored once more to her eternal form."

* Alone Withwith the Psycho / Dying Alone: Enemies who are attacked by Spectre without allies within a certain radius of them take bonus true damage from each strike. This ability works on Illusions (see Self-Duplication below)
* Casting a Shadow
* Dark Is Evil
* Glowing Eyes of Doom
* Joke Character: Starts with low HP, poor offensive capability, no real way to actually fight without aid, is only useful if she catches an opponent alone without any allies (including creeps and summoned pets) and to top it all off, doesn't seem to have a skill that really makes her auto attack scale and scare the crap out of people late game...
** Lethal Joke Character / Magikarp Power: ... until you look at her skills a little more carefully. A percentage of all the damage that she takes is prevented and reflected back to enemies in an area. So what people do with her is take advantage of the skill that encourages enemies to ignore her by firstly rushing an item called Radiance, which gives +60 attack damage, and deals constant damage to enemies simply by having Spectre stand near them. Her Ultimate, though doesn't have the illusions attack immediately after they are summoned, *does* allow things such as auras to affect its intended targets. Auras such as Radiance. So the enemy is going to be caught by an inescapable constant burn, coupled with a super fast illusion chasing and beating on them until one of them dies, with the scary possibility of the *real* Spectre replacing any Illusion standing next to them. If they try to run away from each other so that they don't all get burned by Radiance, the enemy team will instead take the bonus true damage from Spectre's Desolate because they're... well... alone. Worse still, disabling her doesn't stop the majority of her damage, and focusing her down when she's farmed actually increases her damage output, because she's dissipating and reflecting damage, all the while leaving her four mates to do as they please. There is no easy way out of a predicament like this. The only reason she isn't used all the time is because she can't do anything useful without her core items.
* Magikarp Power: Among the absolute hardest carries in the game. Even weaker earlygame than Troll Warlord.
* Nerf: Spectre was a balancing hell back then in original DotA.
** They keep nerfing Spectre. Some believe that Spec will only be out of the Game Breaker category if she is either nerfed to absolute hell, or her entire concept is changed.
* Purple Is the New Black
* Self-Duplication: Spectre's Limit Break summons an illusion of herself next to every enemy hero. After a brief moment of inactivity they will all begin attacking and chasing their targets for a few seconds before disappearing. The real Spectre can teleport to any of the illusions created by her Ulti and begin to engage at will.
* The Unintelligible: In DotA 2, her speech is played forward and backward together at the same time. This is also true in the original Dot ADotA.
* You Cannot Grasp the True Form: As mentioned in the Backstory, "her normal spectral state transcends sensory limitations".

Line 424:
* Poisonous Person
* Rip Van Winkle: He was in a coma for seventeen years.
* Shout-Out: To StarcraftStarCraft. In the original game, he had the model of a Hydralisk.
* Technicolor Toxin
* Whatevermancy
Line 433:
"The fabric of creation needs constant care, lest it grow tattered; for when it unravels, whole worlds come undone. It is the work of the Weavers to keep the fabric tight, to repair worn spots in the mesh of reality. They also defend from the things that gnaw and lay their eggs in frayed regions, whose young can quickly devour an entire universe if the Weavers let their attention lapse. Skitskurr was a master Weaver, charged with keep one small patch of creation tightly woven and unfaded. But the job was not enough to satisfy. It nagged him that the original work of creation all lay in the past; the Loom had done its work and travelled on. He wanted to create rather than merely maintain--to weave worlds of his own devising. He began making small changes to his domain, but the thrill of creation proved addictive, and his strokes became bolder, pulling against the pattern that the Loom had woven. The guardians came, with their scissors, and Weaver's world was pared off, snipped from the cosmic tapestry, which they rewove without him in it. Skitskurr found himself alone, apart from his kind, a state that would have been torment for any other Weaver. But Skitskurr rejoiced, for now he was free. Free to create for himself, to begin anew. The raw materials he needed to weave a new reality were all around him. All he had to do was tear apart this old world at the seams. "

* Big Creepy -Crawlies
* Clock Roaches: He was something close to this until he decided to mess with what he is suppose to protect so guardians removed him from it.
* Four-Legged Insect: A bit of a Subversion since he has six but stands only on four.
Line 448:
"Kaldr, the Ancient Apparition, is an image projected from outside time. He springs from the cold, infinite void that both predates the universe and awaits its end. Kaldr is, Kaldr was, Kaldr shall be...and what we perceive, powerful as it appears to us, is but the faintest faded echo of the true, eternal Kaldr. Some believe that as the cosmos ages and approaches its final moments, the brightness and power of Kaldr will also intensify--that the Ancient Apparition will grow younger and stronger as eternity's end draws nigh. His grip of ice will bring all matter to a stop, his image will cast a light too terrible to behold. An Apparition no longer!"

* Alliteration
* Added Alliterative Appeal
* An Ice Person
* Eldritch Abomination
* Power Floats
* Sealed Evil in Aa Can

Line 466:
* Humanoid Abomination/Nightmare Face
* Madness Mantra: When casting Fiend's Grip.

* Power Born of Madness
* Purple Is the New Black
Line 483:
* Breath Weapon: His standard attack is his mount spitting Fireballs.
* Casanova Wannabe: For a moment he even thinks about hitting on the Broodmother!

* Noun Verber
* Obvious Rule Patch: Players took advantage of Sticky Napalm, a skill that amplifies damage from the Batrider on its victims, by building the constant DPS aura item Radiance, which turned Batrider into a real damage-dealer. Apparently Icefrog disagreed, as he proceeded to change Sticky Napalm so that Radiance could not (normally) trigger the bonus damage any more.
* Playing Withwith Fire: Three of his four abilities are fire-based.
* Throw Down the Bomblet: His attacks include drenching is enemies in napalm and throwing a Molotov Cocktail.
* What a Drag: His flaming lasso.
Line 510:
"Krobelus was a Death Prophet--which is one way of saying she told fortunes for the wealthiest of those who wished to look beyond the veil. But after years of inquiring on behalf of others, she began to seek clues on her own fate. When death refused to yield its secrets, she tried to buy them with her life. But the ultimate price proved insufficient. Death disgorged her again and again, always holding back its deepest mysteries. Her jealousy grew. Others could die for eternity--why not she? Why must she alone be cast back on the shores of life with such tiresome regularity? Why was she not worthy of the one thing all other living creatures took for granted? Still, she would not be discouraged. Each time she returned from the grave, she brought a bit of death back with her. Wraiths followed her like fragments of her shattered soul; her blood grew thin and ectoplasmic; the feasting creatures of twilight took her for their kin.. She gave a little of her life with every demise, and it began to seem as if her end was in sight. With her dedication to death redoubled, and no client other than herself, Krobelus threw herself ever more fervently into death's abyss, intent on fulfilling the one prophecy that eluded her: That someday the Death Prophet would return from death no more."

* Back Fromfrom the Dead/Came Back Wrong
* Death Seeker
* Glowing Eyelights of Un-DeathUndeath
* Necromancer
* Our Banshees Are Louder: Her wailing sounds make her seem as one and in her Exorcism skill, the spirits were described as banshee remnants of her former lives.
Line 528:
* Appendage Assimilation: Creatively referred to as "demonoplasty".
* Baleful Polymorph: He can do this to his enemies with his Hex (called Voodoo in DotA) skill.
* Deal Withwith the Devil: Also resulted to a Faustian Rebellion and killing the demon.
* Evil Sorcerer
* Face Heel Turn
* Finger-Poke of Doom: Finger of Death
* Impaled Withwith Extreme Prejudice: Units hit by Impale/Earth Spike.
* The Left Hand of Doom: The demon's hand.
* Like a Badass Out of Hell
Line 564:
* Canis Latinicus: Some of the responses for his spells.
* Confusion Fu: The Invoker hero has three "reagents", which grant minor buffs life increased speed or damage or regeneration, and Invoke, which grants a skill based on which reagents are active. Since there are ten possible combinations and the effects include summoning, buffing, disabling, creating temporary walls, four different attack spells (one with unlimited range), and turning invisible, it's very difficult to tell what an Invoker will do next. Since the Invoker is limited to having two skills readied at a time, it also makes him Difficult but Awesome.
* Creator in In-Joke: The line "Carl!", that's present in Invoker's responses - designated to be invoked on his spawn, refers to a "leaked" changelog of DotA 6.72, in which "Kael", Invoker's original name, was mistakenly translated as "Carl".
* Death From Above: Chaos Meteor and Sun Strike. The latter is a beam that can be fired anywhere on the map.
* Elemental Powers: He is perhaps the most glorious user of such powers.
* Fire, Ice, Lightning: The basic reagents of his spells.
* Flowery Elizabethan English: When he's not speaking in Canis Latinicus.
* Fun Withwith Acronyms: His responses give creative definitions for his EMP skill such as "Extractive Mana Pulse" "and "Endoleon's Malevolent Perturbation". Quas Wex Exort are more obvious, with the first letters for each being the keyboard hotkeys for those skills.
* Glowing Eyes of Doom
* Monochromatic Eyes
Line 582:

* Actor Allusion/Memetic Mutation

* An Ice Person
* Chained Byby Fashion
* Evil Is Deathly Cold
* Evil Overlord: He was one in his past life as a frost-mage.
* Glowing Eyelights of Un-DeathUndeath
* Our Liches Are Different
* Power Floats
Line 600:
* Body Horror: And he absolutely loves talking about it.
* Combat Medic: "Death Pulse" deals damage to enemies and heals his allies.
* Cursed Withwith Awesome: The curse was suppose to make him ill but he was immune to it and it made him stronger instead.
* Evil Sorcerer
* Glowing Eyes of Doom
Line 619:
* Dem Bones
* Enfant Terrible: Stated on his Backstory.
* Glowing Eyelights of Un-DeathUndeath
* Life Drain: His ultimate.
* Mage Killer: His Netherward punishes enemy spellcasters severely.
Line 636:
* Magic Staff
* Pocket Dimension: As described on Astral Imprisonment:

* Power Crystal: He is a living one.
* Volcanic Veins
Line 690:
* Our Centaurs Are Different: He's based on one in appearance.
