You made a lot of dangerous people very angry, and not many nobles would be able to stop them from taking out their anger on a couple of casteless. If anyone but Bhelen had been courting Rica she probably would have been killed, and as you point out, you do not know at the time that he is the one protecting her. You have every reason to believe that she's going to die because of your actions.
