It's because of this thought that this troper started being ''extra'' nice to servers when he went out to eat.

Plus a significant dark figure of murders that were ''never even recognized'' as murders. Plus plenty of crimes in the middle ages where the authority [[Did Not Do the Research]] of finding the true perpetrators, and instead just picked some poor [[Butt Monkey]] and tortured him/her until he/she confessed the thing. Plus plenty of rapists and child molestors who got away because their victims never dared to talk about the events. And so on, and so forth...

For these people, it often provides ''relief'' when they finally get to know their loved one is ''dead''. A message which normally is the worst one you can imagine makes these people feel ''better''.
