Gag Sub: Difference between revisions

Most people think speech or song in languages they do not understand sounds strange. Some find it amusing to add their own interpretations or "translations" to such sounds, and the internet makes it easy to distribute. Thus the Gag Sub, which is much easier to create than [[Redubbing|redubs]], is born.

 

 

 

* In an instance that's both this ''and'' a [[Gag Dub]], Youtube user PonyNotReady, the creator of a ''[[Puella Magi Madoka Magica]]'' [[Abridged Series]], did [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEUk7fj9j8k&feature=relmfu a version of Mami's theme song] with misheard lyrics sung by Madoka's voice actress for the series (song starts at 0:22, spoilers until then). ''Slutty ovaries! Yeah, Maria has diarrhea! Croatia!''

 

* Japanese comedian and TV personality Tamori has a segment on one of his TV series called "Soramimi Hour" (''soramimi'' being the Japanese term for a [[Mondegreen]]), where viewers are invited to submit lines from real songs, usually in English, that have been misheard as something completely different in Japanese. The misheard lines are usually acted out in little video sketches.

** Likewise, Fall Out Boy's ''Sugar, We're Going Down'' has [http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=sugar+we%27re+going+down+misheard a wide variety] of "translations" available on [[YouTube]], and more for their other songs.

** Also Fall Out Boy's "[[Mondegreen|This ain't a sea, it's a golf-cart arseface!]]" (''Imma little man, I'm also evil, also into cats...also into cats!'')

*** [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_KiXCrmn7g "Ted's Pants" (aka "Dance Dance"] and [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LucfKdukf10 "This Ain't a Scene"] as well. Fall Out Boy songs are quite common for this.

**** There's a Fuse commercial who does this with "Dance Dance" as well.

* Many of these have been done for [http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=caramell+dansen+misheard+lyrics&search_type=&aq=0s&oq=caramelldansen+misheard Caramelldansen], the original Swedish and the Speedycake Remix.

* [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leW9nn8ZCAM Keys Me, by Alyssa Alano] is a video of Filipino actress Alyssa Alano singing [[Sixpence None the Richer]]'s "Kiss Me" in a very heavy Tagalog accent.

* One version of "[[Ominous Latin Chanting|O Fortuna]]". ''"This octopus! Let's give him boots! Send him a car, or pizza!"''

* Earthbound gives us an English to English version happens with [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af1vy9ADE0A Pollyanna]. Made better since originally the writer was originally trying to simply figure out the real lyrics. After hearing the writer gave up and typed what he heard, no matter how strange (e.i. "I believe in ramen sex").

 

** The infamous ''[http://wiki.animutationportal.com/We_Drink_Ritalin We Drink Ritalin]'' is a variation on this. It actually ''is'' in English, but it's English so heavily accented and [[Gratuitous English|nonsensical]] that it sounds like what's in the subtitles, not what the lines are supposed to be.

* The Spanish webmanga author Jesulink does this on videos with opening themes for his series, parodying famous anime theme songs. If you know some Spanish, [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nZRJTNb9vs here's an example] (the song is about a college student who has to clean toilets to pay his rent).

 

* The infamous Finnish version of the [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhSdSzSqLys ''DuckTales'' theme.] Taco Nazi, anyone?

** "I'm going to stroke it... Your arms are BROKEN!"

* [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nZxCuJJu_E&feature=channel This] video (and the two following it) gag sub classic cartoons in German.

* Gag subs of the first episode or two of ''[[Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon]]'' were released within a day or so of their broadcast. Among other "revisions", these subs referred to the youma as [[Naughty Tentacles|tentacle monsters]] and characters broke the [[Fourth Wall]] several times to comment on how badly the show would traumatize children. They also included gag-subbed commercials, too, including what was apparently originally a Japanese McDonald's ad that was already somewhat weird owing to the somewhat constipated look on the Japanese "Ronald's" face... even ''before'' the pedophile joke in the subtitles came at the end. In fact, that particular gag sub also featured at least one other commercial with a pedophile joke, for children's underwear at a local department store which featured a cute little girl whose line was "translated" as "They're pedolicious!".

* ''[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc-uGW5gmlg The Adventures of Nagato Yuki]'' says what 20% of the fandom is thinking.

** One gag sub had a references to numerous anime (including a mildly obscure [[Martian Successor Nadesico]] quote) as well as changing every single line into a hilarious parody of the actual script, without losing anything major from the story.

** They also released an episode of ''[[Soul Eater]]'' that was "translated" by someone who couldn't even understand Japanese.

* Little-known anime ''Massugu ni Ikou'' had a gag sub, the first part of which can be seen [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77lb4e8eeew here] (unfortunately, it seems the other parts have been taken down). It takes a heartwarming slice-of-life series about dogs and puts a much [[Crosses the Line Twice|darker spin]] on it, including jokes about [[Refuge in Audacity|slavery, violence, and bestiality]]. You heard me.

 

** More famous are the fake Swedish subtitles in the movie's [[Credits Gag|silly opening credits]], which start out fairly literal ("Mønti Pythøn ik den Hølie Gräilen") but then become completely irrelevant as the credits get more technical ("A Møøse once bit my sister...")

* In ''[[Top Secret]]'', the East German national anthem (actually based on the anthem of Shorewood High School, from which writer David Zucker graduated) is translated in the subtitles as:

Forget it, the guards will kill you, if the electrified fence doesn't first." }}

 

** ''[[Go Go Sentai Boukenger]] [[The Movie]]: The Strongest Precious'' gets rewritten into [http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/comedy/watch/v15818479mc4DdRr7# Operation Overdrive: A Power Rangers Movie -- The Bitch's Betrayal.] Apart from rehashing the theme of characters interacting with Bandai (this time to prevent them from releasing Bowdlerised toy molds), this one combines both types of Gag Subs by overlaying the movie's opening theme with misheard lyrics (but leaving any [[Gratuitous English]] intact), including a spot-on lampshading of the genre:

* The fansubbers of ''[[Hikari Sentai Maskman]]'' take potshot of Okelampa's [[Catch Phrase]] "Yare yare" after [[Make My Monster Grow|he does his duty]], and make him say things like "I need a raise", or asking if the Maskmen never shoot him first, or more ridiculous lines that cannot be contained with mere "Yare Yare".

* After ''[[Top Gear]]'' drops a piano onto a Morris Marina allegedly belonging to the President of France's wife, we get [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaM8ZedQw08&feature=related this].

* The notorious "Whitney Lies Version" of ''[[Final Fantasy VII|Advent Children]]'' is considered to be more comprehensible than the actual script. Its highlight was probably the "bee noises" scene.

** Another AC parody, ''Advent Fanboys,'' turns the Sephiroth clones into ''Spirits Within'' fans trying to prove it's a good movie. Other noteworthy additions include orphan-eating commentary and auditions for a Cloud/Tifa porn video.

 

** Also, Episode 9, where the beginning of the real episode from the Spanish dub is shown, with fake subtitles.

*** That sequence in Ep 10 was an attempt to make a new theme for the show. Fans did not like.

** While we're at it, almost ''any'' video on [[YouTube]] that has the cc button on it works as a type 2 gag dub.

 

* Clips of the claymation cartoon ''[[Pingu]]'', where all the characters are voiced by the same actor and speak in expressive gibberish, have been treated like this several times. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbaApZuN8YM See this clip for a relatively innocent English-language example, in which the penguins suddenly live in a communist society.] There are several others with subtitles in Swedish that are full of crude jokes.
