Sonic the Hedgehog is an antropomorphic hedgehog in a world full of antropomorphic animals. His super-speed and ability to generate large amounts of energy from his quills is something his guardian Longclaw, a owl, tells him to hide, as she knows there is people who will hunt down Sonic for those powers. Those people reveal themselves as the Echidna tribe, leaded by [[Sonic Adventure|Pachacamac]]. Longclaw sends Sonic away, with the hedgehog using a ring to create a portal to Earth. Longclaw instructs Sonic to still hide his powers in this new world, and her fate is left unclear as the portal closes and she is last seen making a last stand against the furious echidnas.

Ten years later, Sonic is living isolated on a small city on Montana. He is constantly watching the humans and their lives, but Longclaw's orders keep him of revealing himself to them. Driven to a mental breakdown by this isolation, Sonic accidently uses his powers in such a way that he creates a giant electrocmagnetic pulse that hits the Northwest of the United States, prompting military response.

Knowing the humans will come for him after what he had done, Sonic plans to escape but Tom Wachowski, a human police officer, makes him lose his bag of rings, with it falling through a portal to San Franscisco. To retrieve it, they have to travel by car, as Sonic says he lacks a sense of direction. Meanwhile, american military hires Ivo Robotnik, an egomaniac mercenary and scientist specialized in robotics, to discover the cause of the electromagnetic pulse. In other words, Sonic.

Produced by Sega Sammy Group, Original Film, Marza Animation Planet, and Blur Studio. Distributed by Paramount Pictures.
