It's a [[Discredited Trope]] if you ask me; there are two bartenders at my favorite bar whom I know quite well and would even consider friends, but when I go in and let them know I've had a bad day, they might make my drinks a little stronger but they're pretty short on patience for listening to me bitch and moan about it. Still, while you can certainly blame Trek for falling into such an obvious cliche, it's not like they invented it.

* It's basically the creative staff having a near-deific view of Whoopi Goldberg. Absolutely no idea why, but apparently everyone that worked behind the scenes thought she was the greatest treasure of several generations or some shit.
