Tux Racer
Tux Racer is a single-player first-person 3D cross-platform computer game created by Sunspire Studios in 1999. You play as Tux the Penguin as you race him down various icy slopes of a big mountain trying to establish a fast course time. Powerups take the form of tasty herring. The game was originally open source before becoming proprietary. However, a fork of the game titled Extreme Tux Racer, formerly known as Planet Penguin Racer, remains open source to this day.
The original Tux Racer can be found here, while its open source successor Extreme Tux Racer can be found here. Thirteen courses come bundled with the game, and more courses can be found here. It is also straightforward to create custom courses using a graphics editor.
Tropes used in Tux Racer include:
- Everything's Better with Penguins
- Expansion Pack: "Tuxracer Belly Rub" offers a huge one.
- Getting Crap Past the Radar: From "Tuxracer Belly Rub", the courses "Big Ass Jump" and "I've Got a Woody".
- Made of Iron: A real penguin would be skua pabulum after a few of the collisions Tux survives unscathed.
