The capital of the [[Eagle Land|United States of America]], Washington, District of Columbia, (colloquially D.C. or ''The District'') is home to the U.S. federal government. Well, most of it. The land was originally taken from Maryland and Virginia in 1790. The Virginia part was returned in 1846 as what is now Arlington County and the City of Alexandria, which are still part of the same urban area.
