  • Calvin helps prove that Mr. Jenkins has a better side to him by sharing a memory with Meg of a time when he'd outgrown his shoes and his mother couldn't afford new ones, forcing him to make do with an old pair of women's shoes with the heels and toes cut off. Mr. Jenkins gave him a new pair of shoes in the right size, which he'd unconvincingly scuffed up a bit in order to try to pass them off as used in an effort to downplay the gesture.
