An American in Paris/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Non Sequitur Scene: Two major ones happen within this film.
    • The first happens when Oscar Levant's character Adam envisions himself performing in a grand concert hall in front of thousands of people. The catch? The band, and even the audience, is composed of just Adam. In a scene that lasts for about 5 minutes 6 seconds. And when that scene is over, it is never so much as whispered to the rest of the cast for the duration of the film. Here it is: http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/247723/American-In-Paris-An-Movie-Clip-Adam-s-Fantasy.html. (Also doubles as a Take That/Take That, Me since Oscar Levant was a professional musician)
    • Another one occurs 20 minutes before the end of the film, and lasts just as long. It is the "American in Paris Ballet Scene", in which Jerry, just losing the girl of his life to his best friend, is facing an emotional crisis. As he leans over the balcony, the current scene fades to this elaborate, almost silent dance sequence that is supposed to sum up both the events of the film and Jerry's feelings during the process. However, it doesn't help the fact that the amazing colors, visual effects, and lack of dialogue to guide us confuses the hell out of us. And, by the time the scene's done, Lise has already run back into Jerry's arms, the two have walked off into the distance without a word, and the movie is already over.
