A Jukebox Musical of famous Gershwin songs, it opened in 1992 on Broadway with a book by Ken Ludwig, directed by Mike Ockrent and choreography by Susan Stroman. Starred Jodi Benson as Polly, Harry Groener as Bobby Child, Bruce Adler as Bela Zangler, John Hillner as Lank Hawkins, Michele Pawk as Irene Roth, Jane Connell as Mother, Beth Leavel as Tess (Leavel also understudied Benson), Ronn Carroll as Everett Baker, and Stephen Temperley and Amelia White as Eugene and Patricia Fodor. It Is loosely based on the 1930 musical Girl Crazy. It ran for 1,622 performances in the Shubert Theatre, nominated for nine Tonys in 1992 and winning three ( for Best Costume Design, Best Choreography and Best Musical) The 43rd longest running Broadway show.
