* Possibly the ultimate example of a well-done [[Dark Fic]] is the ''[[Ranma ½|Ranma 1/2]]'' story ''[http://web.archive.org/web/20071202084045/www.allaboutranma.com/fanfics/Bitter_End/bitterend.html [The Bitter End]]''. It [[Deconstruction|deconstructs]] the [[Fanon]] " psychobitch" Akane into a real person with a real mental disorder, and then follows this premise all the way to its dark, bloody and horrifying conclusion.

* Take any story where females [[Double Standard Abuse (Female on Male)|regularly beat up the male leads,]] such as ''[[Ranma ½]], [[ZeroThe no Tsukaima|Familiar Ofof Zero]]'', or ''[[Love Hina]]'', and you'll have quite a few fics written about how the male lead is ''not'' shrugging off a casual [[Megaton Punch]] thrown his way, but is sent to the hospital or even fights back.

* This seems to be a popular trend in ''[[Pokémon]]'' fanfiction, though in a world with [[Olympus Mons|god-like beings fighting each other]] a certain amount of dark is expected when [[Humans Are Bastardsthe Real Monsters|humans]] control them. The multiple-novel-sized ''[https://web.archive.org/web/20120626101741/http://members.iinet.net.au/~aceywacey/pokemon.htm Pokemon Master]'' claims to be "the first major '''Dark''' ''[[Pokémon]]'' Fanfiction released on the Internet", while ''[[Latias' Journey]]'' is a standout example. It often seems as if the authors are trying to out-angst ''[[Neon Genesis Evangelion]]''.

** An another example is ''[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6377396/1/Spiral Spiral]'' which features a lot of dark themes, including sex between the girls.

** A highly popular yet unfinished [[Dark Fic]] is ''[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/117422/1/A_bDangerous_b_bPairing_b A Dangerous Pairing]''. The story features an evil version of both Usagi and Mamoru.

** In dark fics featuring Hinata as the main character, you can bet Hiashi is going to be subject to [[Flanderization]] as a [[Complete Monster]], [[Jerkass]], [[The Antichrist]], [[Kick the Dog|kicker ]] and [[Shoot the Dog|shooter of dogs]], [[Manipulative Bastard]], [[Smug Snake]], and all-around not nice guy. All this despite the fact that in canon, he isn't really such a bad guy, just proud and strict. He's revealed to be quite a sympathetic character quite early on, as well.

** ''[[Naruto Veangance Revelaitons]]'', was said [[Word of God|by the author]] to be an attempt at a dark fic, and there is no shortage of terrible happenings in there, including mass murder, rape (by "[[Designated Hero|heroes]]" and villains alike), and even {{spoiler|the end of the world}}.

* ''[[Axis Powers Hetalia]]'' is a manga series about [[Moe Anthropomorphism|personified countries]]. It goes without saying that darker stories--especiallystories—especially involving [[Psychopathic Manchild|Russia]] or any colonial power, past or present--basedpresent—based on actual historical events are not uncommon.

** Another popular subject is the conflict between North and South Korea. North Korea is usually portrayed as a [[Broken Bird|hardened woman]] [[Lady of War|soldier]] whose goal is to force her brother South Korea to accept communism--whethercommunism—whether he likes it or not. The conflict usually is portrayed as bloody and [[Tear Jerker|tear-jerking]], and both Russia and America have no qualms about taking advantage of it.

** There are also quite a few darkfics based around the end of Prussia or the berlin Wall, which usually involve him being kidnapped and tortured/raped by Russia for a few decades. Hell, any fic about Russia and the Soviet countries is practically guaranteed to have him do horrible things to them, esspecially [[The Woobie|Lithuania]]), Latvia, or the aformentioned Prussia.

** In the case of works like ''The [[Nineteen Eighty Three1983 Doomsday Stories]],'' this can also be subverted. Nations die and suffer from the aftermath of [[After the End|Doomsday]]. But further down the line, things ''do'' [[A World Half Full|get better for at least some of them]].

** [http://www.fanfiction.net/u/64284/Random1377 Random1377] is another prolific ''NGE'' darkfic author, with entries such as ''[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1259313/1/The_Lifespan_of_a_Love_Affair The Lifespan of a Love Affair]'' (a brutal deconstruction of the [[May-DecemberMay–December Romance|Misato/Shinji pairing]]), ''[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1747319/1/Let_She_Who_is_Without_Sin Let She Who is Without Sin]'' (about a [[Serial Killer]]), and ''[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/483402/1/Aoi Aoi]'' (includes Shinji being killed in the first chapter, and falls apart from there).

* ''[[Soul Eater]]'' has been getting a few, too. For example, ''A Souls Songbook'' is a [[Alternate Universe Fic]] where the battle between Shinigami-sama & Asura eight centuries ago [[For Want of a Nail|went the other way]], resulting in a [[Crapsack World]] run by the witches, the Kishin [[Religion of Evil|is worshiped by the mainstream religion]], and the [[Shapeshifter Weapon|Shapeshifter Weapons]]s [[What Measure Is a Humanoid?|are considered things.]]

It starts off fairly light -- andlight—and then the Emperor [[Nuke'Em|nukes a city]] to try and kill the Digidestined. It lightens up for a while after that, but then really darkens during the last third or so of the story, as [[Manipulative Bastard|Devimon]] [[Mind Rape|Mind Rapes]]s Davis to create the being known as [[Super-Powered Evil Side|Dark]][[Complete Monster|heart]], who spends the next dozen or so chapters [[Curb Stomp Battle|curb-stomping]] and tormenting the Destined. And while that's happening, there's a [[Big Bad Ensemble|three]]-[[Evil Versus Evil|way]] [[Melee a Trois|invasion]] of the Real World that devastates Tokyo and ultimately leads to several [[Anyone Can Die|character deaths]]. And for the record, one of the factions that invades the Real World is/are an [[Expy]] of [[Halo|the Flood]], so, yeah...

Suesse And The Mystery New Pirate Age!|Marie D Suesse And The Mystery New Pirate Age!]]'' deliberately invokes as many ''[[One Piece]]'' fanfiction cliches as possible, then breaks down and explores what would happen in those cases if [[Reality Ensues|reality ensued]]. The results are often both hilarious and horrific.

* Being a [[Reality Warper]] whose powers can manifest subconsciously, it's easy to write Wiccan of the ''[[Young Avengers|Wiccan]]'' in the most [[Fridge Horror|creepy light imaginable]] without making him OOC. [http://archiveofourown.org/works/189471 This fanfic] takes the cake.

== [[Literature]] ==

** ''[[Hogwarts Exposed]]'' is something of a [[Dark Fic]], full as it is of rape, pedophilia, torture and bodily functions; the author [[Flip-Flop of God|disagreed with himself]] as to the extent to which this was intentional.

* ''[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4516602/1/The_Paper_Doll_Kindergarten The Paper Doll Kindergarten]'' is a darkfic for the ''[[Twilight (novel)|Twilight]]'' series, of all things. Remember Nessie (or Renesmee Carlie, if you prefer), Bella's super-quick-growing genius vampire baby? Well, Nessie isn't happy. Sadly, this fic is no longer available for whatever reason. There's certainly other ''Twilight'' darkfic (a lot of it concerned with the Cullen family's sex life before Bella showed up, usually leading to [[I Hate You, Vampire Dad|vampiric]] [[Not Blood Siblings|pseudo-incest]]) but none quite as [[Deconstruction|deconstructionydeconstruction]]y.

* ''[[Day of the Barney Trilogy (Fanfic)|Day of the Barney]]'', which depicts [[Barney and Friends|Barney the Dinosaur]] as an evil immortal overlord hell-bent on conquering the world (his first and only successful attempt involves inciting every child in the world into a riot against everyone else) with a major case of hypocrisy, not being afraid to murder in graphic manners while maintaining his sickeningly sweet personality. Oh, and his backstory holds him responsible for killing the dinosaurs, corrupting Caligula, unleashing the Black Plague, rescuing [[Adolf Hitler]] and leading [[Those Wacky Nazis]] to Anne Frank.

** Speaking of Anne Frank, there was once a fanfic where Anne continues her diary while imprisoned.

* Remember the ''[[Star Trek: The Next Generation|Star Trek the Next Generation]]'' episode with many Enterprises and a reality where {{spoiler|"Federation has lost and Borg are everywhere"}}? Well, there is a fanfic about it [http://mabus101.livejournal.com/109438.html here].

* The [[Marissa Picard (Fanfic)|Marissa Picard]] storys [sic] are light-hearted ''[[Star Trek: The Next Generation|Star Trek the Next Generation]]'' fanfiction centering on one [[Mary Sue]] character. These fanfic stories have attracted some of ''their own fanfics'', including some that are very dark indeed (such as ''[https://web.archive.org/web/20120512141840/http://home.ix.netcom.com/~mblackwl/darkm_1.txt Dark Marrissa #1: The Master Builders]'' and ''Marrissa Pays Off Karma'').

* Many ''[[MASHM*A*S*H (television)|M*A*S*H]]'' fics focus on Hawkeye Pierce struggling to adjust to life after the war and often end with him being [[Driven to Suicide]]. Arguably justifiable, as he always was a little bipolar and {{spoiler|had a complete psychological breakdown in the series finale that caused him to be committed to a mental hospital.}} Fanfic writer Meredith Bronwen Mallory has some disturbingly well-written darkfics on Fanfiction.net. Mostly [[Slash Fic]], but all haunting and brilliant.

* ''[[HarpersHarper's Island]]'' has a lot of darkfic based on the [[Big Bad]]'s plan succeeding.

* Believe it or not, fanfiction.net's small cache of [[Everybody Loves Raymond]] fanfic consists ''almost entirely'' of [[Dark Fic]], which is pretty surprising for a sitcom. There are a couple of fics where Debra cheats on Ray with Robert (including one where the result of this action is both Ray and Amy becoming embittered, dark souls who join forces to plot revenge, if I remember correctly), one where Marie has a heart attack and the other characters stand around sneering and laughing at her instead of calling an ambulance, and one that features teenaged versions of Ray and Debra as angst-ridden [[Emo Teen|Emo Teens]]s who spend an afternoon cutting themselves.

* ''[[How I Met Your Mother]]'' has an ''[http://himym-darkfic.livejournal.com/ entire livejournal community of darkfic]'' -- an—an impressive feat for any fandom, let alone a ''sitcom''. Most of them involve various main characters getting into abusive relationships (either with each other or with one-shot or original characters, but most often Barney/Robin), extreme genre shifts changing the setting from comedy to crime/drama or thriller/horror multichapter stories, or subjecting one or more of of the characters' pasts to a [[Cerebus Retcon]], again, usually involving abuse. [http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1768063/idioticonion idioticonion] is one of the fandom's most prolific darkfic writers.

* ''[[Hunting the Unicorn (Fanfic)|Hunting the Unicorn]]'' is a ''[[Glee]]'' fic that's heavily influenced by ''[[The Last Unicorn (novel)|The Last Unicorn]]''. It [[Deconstruction Fic|deconstructs]] Kurt and Blaine's [[Tastes Like Diabetes|sugary,]] [[But Not Too Gay|chaste]] romance by exposing just what would make them (and ''especially'' Blaine) act like they do in the show. According to readers, the effect is [[Tear Jerker|heartbreaking]].

* [[VocaloidWattpad]] has somea prettyfair share of dark fanfics, such as ''[httphttps://www.fanfictionwattpad.netcom/sstory/7757302/1/From_Concert_to_Chaos132307011-in-the-dark FromIn ConcertThe to ChaosDark]'', whicha involves[[crossover]] Mikuwith and Rin'sthe [[EvilSpice Counterpart|Evil CounterpartsGirls]] attackingand them[[Backstreet onBoys]], stagedealing ''duringwith a concert''bus accident, abduction, and in{{Spoiler front|Melanie ofChisholm}} overdeveloping 16,000post-trauma stress and fansrecovering.

* There are quite a few ''[[Peanuts]]'' darkfics out there, but [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3174346/1/High_School this] one probably takes the cake. {{spoiler|In it, all the characters are teenagers. Pig-pen gets Violet pregnant.; Snoopy gets rabies, kills Woodstock and Linus and infects Sally with the disease.; Schroeder is a [[Depraved Homosexual|gay psychopath]] who kills Lucy, kills the rabid Snoopy, and then admits his love to Linus as he dies.' Peppermint Patty and Marcie are [[Les Yay|lesbians]] with AIDS.; and Charlie Brown is [[Emo Teen|emo]] and commits suicide.}}

** ''[[Dog Sees God]]'' is something like this, {{spoiler|though it gives Charlie Brown ana [[Earn Your Happy Ending]]|happier conclusion]].}}

* The infamous (at least among ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' fans) ''A Sorcerer, A Demon, And Emeralds''. Filled with graphic violence, torture, {{spoiler|''Sonic'' trivia}}, and [[Squick|squickysquick]]y sex (mostly rape), with the other characters {{spoiler|futilely}} trying to stop [[Face Heel Turn|Dark Sonic]]. If you dare look up and read this fic, get out the Brain Bleach, you're gonna need it.

** The [[MS TingMSTing]] only covers bits and pieces of it, because nobody in their right mind would try to riff the whole thing. Rumor has it someone tried, and literally threw up during the attempt. Rape, torture and cannibalism do not inspire "good-natured ribbin'."

* ''[[Tales of Symphonia]]'' is very far toward the idealistic side of the [[Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism|sliding scale]], full of bright colors and empowering morals. But since almost none of the characters have any [[Parental Abandonment|living family]], the Exspheres that give the protagonists extra power are not only made from [[Powered by a Forsaken Child|human souls]], but those souls are implied in some cases to be [[And I Must Scream|still conscious]], and you have the option of {{spoiler|killing the [[Handsome Lech]]}}, the canon seems practically ''designed'' to inspire [[Dark Fic]].

* ''[[Touhou]]'' games are based on [[Excuse Plot|Excuse Plots]]s of some [[Youkai]] being dumb or just plain bored and end with a [[Spot of Tea]] or some similar meeting of all the main characters, [[Improbably-Fundamentally Female Cast|heroines]] and [[Good All Along|"villainesses"]] alike, but for every [[WAFF]] or [[Slice of Life]] fanfiction there's a darkfic to counter it. The mountains of [[Fridge Horror]] and being a definite [[Crap Saccharine World]] don't exactly help, humans almost completely at the mercy of the incredibly powerful youkai that can (and have) put the entirety of Gensokyo at risk on a whim, and despite [[Cute Monster Girl|their appearance]] a lot of characters are derived from and/or have the potential to be some truly horrifying creatures.

** ''[[Imperfect Metamorphosis (Fanfic)|Imperfect Metamorphosis]]'' can probably challenge ''Ibunshu'' for darkfic points, if only because its [[Alternate Universe Fic|alterations to the source material]] aren't as explicit. The ''[[Non-Indicative First Episode|first chapter]]'' ends with one of [[Fan Nickname|Team 9]] getting ''eaten'', and it continues with a rampage in Eientei, [[Super-Powered Evil Side|EX-Rumia]] being unleashed, Yukari gathering the most powerful and influential beings in Gensoukyou, then [[Humanoid Abomination|Yuuka]] decides she wants to play as well...

** ''Reimu Surrenders and is Destroyed'' is considered one of the most repulsive [[Hentai]] [[Doujinshi|Doujinshis]]s to be released about the series (once again links will not and '''should not''' be provided) which involves a [[Brought Down to Normal]] Reimu encountering a lowlife in an alleyway. Once again, it's a [[Hentai]]. Do the math. '''Graphic''' for it's eleven-page length (a safe way to put it), to the point that several hentai sites don't even allow it.

* While ''[[Pokémon]]'' is quite the dark series [[Crap Saccharine World|disguised as a kids series]] a lot of writers take this to the edge, making protagonists into a [[Dysfunction Junction]] and putting in every strand of canon darkness.

* ''[[Star Wars Force Unleashed]]'' is an official [[Dark Fic]] of the [[Star Wars]] franchise, getting darker when you play the DLC where the main character becomes a full out [[Villain Protagonist]].

* ''[[Sailor Nothing]]'' takes the ''[[Sailor Moon]]'' style [[Magical Girl]] genre and [[Deconstruction Fic|deconstructs]] it into a realistically horrifying tale similar to, yet totally different tofrom ''[[Puella Magi Madoka Magica]]''. The story follows a teenage girl who, after [[Jumped At the Call|jumping at the chance to be a hero]], spends most of her time fighting evil rather than making friends, doing well in school, and generally living her life. This is made worse by the fact that it is during high school, so her social reputation is constantly demolished, and that she can never truly quit being a hero.

* A popular meme on [[Tumblr]] involves "genre swap" -- i—i.e., taking carefully-selected screenshots of a particular fandom and arranging them and moderately manipulating their tint, exposure, brightness, etc to make them fit a completely different genre. You've got some dark-to-light -- ''[[Dexter]]'' as a romantic comedy! ''[[Breaking Bad]]'' as a Rogers and Hammerstein musical ("Albuquerque's Alive With The Sound Of Dealing")! -- but others are light-to-dark, such as ''[[Glee]]'' as a [https://web.archive.org/web/20120729222613/http://all-delightedpeople.tumblr.com/post/8243635716/genre-swap-glee-as-a-horror-film horror film], ''[[How I Met Your Mother]]'' as a [http://echofades.tumblr.com/post/3623885710 murder mystery] (involving the murder of the eponymous mother), or ''[[Tangled]]'' as a [https://web.archive.org/web/20120729222201/http://skysearcher.tumblr.com/post/9674849908/genre-swap-tangled-as-a-psychological-thriller psychological thriller.]

* Given the material, some of the timelines and stories on [[Alternate History Dot ComAlternateHistory.com]] arguably fall under this in relation to [[Alternate History]]. These are generally brutal, [[Crapsack World|Crapsack Worlds]]s ranging from victorious Nazis to [[World War III|nuclear holocaust]]. One specific example would be ''[[A World of Laughter, A World of Tears|A World of Laughter a World of Tears]]'', which follows the unforeseen consequences of Walt Disney's election into the White House.

* ''[[Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (animation)|Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers]]'' has spawned quite a few of these, most notable of which is "[[The Nowakverse]]" by John Nowak. It's about Gadget's long-lost twin sister who wants to kill Gadget because she thinks their father rejected her because she was born with one arm. It was eventually given a [[MS TingMSTing]] co-written by John Nowak himself.

** Dark Phineas and Ferb fics are surprisingly(?) common. [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6139187/1/Lacrimosa "Lacrimosa"] was a good one, which now sadly seems to be dead (involving an old partner of Perry's torturing Phineas [[For the Evulz|for the funsies]]), [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5578088/1/Over_Complexity_is_a_Wonderful_Thing "Over Complexity is a Wonderful Thing"] and its sequel, [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6214119/1/DoubleCrossed_and_Back_Into_the_Fray "DoubleCrossed and Back Into the Fray!"] are [[Alternate Universe]] [[War Fic|War Fics]]s involving the occasional...rather graphic scene (including Irving being blown to dust by a grenade, though [[Base Breaker|it's not like some of the fanbase would mind]]), and [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6085942/1/Discovery_The_Shadow_Chronicles_1 The] [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6130006/1/Not_The_Only_Ones_The_Shadow_Chronicles_2 Shadow] [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6366598/1/Shadow_Chronicles_3_Painful_Truth Chronicles] are pretty basic [[Dark Fic]].

* ''[[Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers]]'' was already pretty vicious for a mid-[[The Eighties|eighties]] cartoon, but when the fanfic writers get a hold of it, they have zero problem playing up [[Getting Crap Past the Radar|the stuff the writers only got to hint at]], like the [[Training Fromfrom Hell|brutality of Wolf Den]], [[Corrupt Bureaucrat|the corruption in Earth's government]], etc. One of the show's writers, Chris "Kaymo" Rowley, made the mistake of joking about the villainess's sexual tastes to the fanfic writers. [[Foregone Conclusion|You can probably guess what happened next]]. Taking the crown is [https://web.archive.org/web/20120510063849/http://www.annkniggendorf.de/gr/timeline.html Ann Kathrin Kniggendorf]. Very well-written and exceptionally brutal. The scariest one is "Raumjager," (a timeline where [[Nazi Germany]] not only won, but has gone on to conquer the galaxy, and the normally persecuted Shane is now considered a paragon of the ubermenchen ideal...scarier when you remember [[Germans Love David Hasselhoff|that the writer is German herself]]). The nastiest is "The Lie" - massive [[Squick]], [[Rape as Drama]], and a very unsettling ending on top of it.

* Unsuprisingly, ''[[Jimmy Two-Shoes]]'' is lending itself well to this. Being a kids show that takes place in [[Hell]], it was asking for it.

** There's also [httphttps://web.archive.org/web/20190822113555/https://m.fanfiction.net/s/6916184/1/ Felony]. This (so far, unfinished) story deals with some mysterious disappearances that have been going on in Bikini Bottom in the past few years. Spongebob is getting worried, but he and Patrick decide to go to Goofy Goober's for some ice cream. They end up [[Drunk on Milk|getting drunk]], just like in [[The Movie]], and get into a barfight. Spongebob is taken to the emergency room, but is ok. Patrick, however, is nowhere to be found. {{spoiler|It turns out Plankton captured Patrick and took him over to the Chum Bucket. Patrick also learns where all the citizens have been disappearing, and what [[I Am a Humanitarian|Plankton's been making his chum out of]].}}

* The ''[[My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic|My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic]]'' fandom is '''filled''' with these:

** The notorious, infamous little number called ''[[Cupcakes (Fanfic)|Cupcakes]]'', in which Pinkie Pie [[Gorn|gleefully tortures and mutilates Rainbow Dash to death]], all while retaining her [[Genki Girl]] spirit.

** ''[[Bittersweet (Fanficfanfic)|Bittersweet]]'' deals with the aftermath of Pinkie Pie dying from complications of diabetes.

** ''[https://web.archive.org/web/20110923152523/http://abchihuahua98.deviantart.com/#/d3hktgm Prince Charming]'', in which Rarity gets so pissed at [[Prince Charmless|Prince Blueblood]], that she decides to [[Frankenstein's Monster|create her own boyfriend in her shop]]. [[What Could Possibly Go Wrong?|Gosh, what could go wrong?]]
