Evoland is a Homage to the history of video games. You start (very briefly) only able to move to the right, and open a chest; that gives you the ability to move left and right. As you collect more and more chests, the game advances from early "screen at a time" video games, to smooth scrolling, to 3D rendered with dynamic lighting and anti-aliasing.
Along the way, the gameplay mimics everything from early top-down "stab it with a stick" games, to Final Fantasy and the Triple Triad sub-game.
Gameplay Roulette is the definition of the action. At least one puzzle requires switching back and forth multiple times between 8-bit behavior and 3D behavior.
