* Synopsis: 200 years ago, the Fiends Tiamat of Wind and Kraken of Water stole the respective Orbs from their altars, disrupting the flow of wind and greatly disturbing the sea. The people of this land live in fear of the final two Orbs being stolen and their world thrown into total Chaos, but they still have hope in an ancient prophecy.<br /><br />'When the world is in darkness<br />Four Warriors will come----'<br /><br />The time now is not right for this prophecy to be fulfilled, but the events must be set in motion. This is the tale, not of the fulfillment of the prophecy, but of how it was made possible.<br />This is...the First Fantasy.
* Comments: It's a good, but at 100,000+ word read, and the author essentially recreates the Final Fantasy world of the past. It does tend to follow the story of Final Fantasy to a point. Beware, the entire story is not divided into multiple chapters.

* Synopsis: A novelization of the original game.
* Comments: The characterization of the Light Warriors is very nice without simply aping 8-Bit Theater, especially the Black Mage. But most of all, it examines the game's headache-inducing Time Loop and makes it understandable.
** I'll second this nomination. It's certainly not the most well-written thing in the world, and the occasional use of all-caps for emphasis can get a little jarring, but as a story goes it does a pretty good job of coming up with a decent overarching plot from what in the game was pretty much "restore the Crystals." It also gives a nice set of personalities for the characters that one can use instead of the 8-bit Theater ones. The one thing I didn't like so much is that it uses the NES names and appearances for everything, which can be pretty jarring for someone (like me) used to the GBA version. *** I'll third it. The writing is above average, though nothing special, and it uses basic fantasy hero archetypes for the most part. There's White Mage, the Brave Knight, the agile Elven Thief, and, finally, as mentioned above, the Black Mage. Overall, a good, solid story. And the ending isn't all that bad, although it does It really shines for the first half, though, when all the character development is still under way. Though, one last thing to mention, Bikke is suddenly Crazy Awesome. Inferno 232
