Rex is a charming teenager with a sharp sense of humor and a thirst for adventure (at least, if you ask him). He is living the dream as the point man of a high-powered super-spy team and is amazed by the weird world he's a part of, and most definitely digs the spotlight as Providence's weapon of choice. It's like being a super-powered rock star, most of the time. Like any teen, there's a lot going on with Rex that keeps him awake at night – mainly the amnesia that's robbed him of his past. He can't remember anything beyond the few months before joining Providence because they promised to help him learn where he comes from. He is driven toward any clues that might help unlock his memories or better understand and master the strange but wonderful machines banging around inside of him.

* [[Amnesiac Dissonance]]: Before his most recent memory loss, he was a self-centered [[Jerkass]] thug who betrayed his best friends out of convenience. After, he's still a jerk, but is willing to risk his life for people he doesn't know all the time.
* [[Anti-Hero]]: [[Sliding Scale of Anti-Heroes|Type]] [[Knight in Sour Armor|II]]. It's pretty unquestionable that at heart he's a good person, but he's also prone to reckless and selfish behavior that can land him in trouble.

** He does it again in episode 35,  {{spoiler|where he trades Quarry for Circe to Breach, since Breach needs to bring back a traitor/failure to appease Van Kleiss about her own slip-up earlier that episode. Rex knew he was pretty much dooming Quarry, and did so anyways. When Quarry comes back, Rex outright wonders how he even survived the experience.}} Notable because there was clearly a more lawful and less violent solution that by all rights Rex would normally be ''required'' to take if he was being held accountable. In other words, Rex went out of his way to royally screw an enemy over, possibly to his death, even after said enemy had surrendered and the mission was over.
* [[Artistic Age]]: The fact that he is only 15 came as a bit of a surprise to some viewers; many assumed he was 20-ish.
* [[Awesomeness By Analysis]]: He is apparently consciously aware of the angles and trajectories his ranged weapons need to hit moving targets (Which requires knowledge of Differential Calculus level math at least, although the show only makes mention of Trigonometry).

** Another instance: in "Alliance" he's able turn two major enemy factions against eachother, create internal strife in one faction, and thwart the villains plans, seemingly all for kicks (his primary objective being something entirely separate). He does this while [[Third Person Person|narrating]] his every action, even during stealth, and he arbitrarily [[Screw This, I'm Outta Here|quits]] once he gets the two factions fighting.
** Later episodes do show him being a well-behaved and competent field operative, usually when infiltrating enemy bases.

* [[Chick Magnet]]: Rex has drawn the attention of Circe, Breach, Annie, Cricket, a high ranking Green Fist eco-terrorist, Dr. Holiday's kid sister, and a random delivery girl. All of them have shown varying amounts of [[Ship Tease|interest]] in Rex.
* [[Chivalrous Pervert]]: To an extent. He'll hit on women he barely knows, but he's more delicate around anyone he's actually interested in or respects.
* [[Character Development]]: Evident in "Alliance", where he acknowledges his attraction to Circe without it being an issue, whereas in earlier episodes it was a clear distraction. By "Hard Target", he's alright with her dating someone else {{spoiler|(she isn't)}}—the bigger issue is the ensuing three's-a-crowd dynamic.
* [[Deadpan Snarker]]: Coupled with an inability to take anything seriously. Rex is constantly joking, and the more dire and serious things get, the more he dials up the snark. At times, it can get to the point where it seems to be a coping mechanism more than anything else. Which is confirmed in "Heroes United".
* [[Destructive Savior]]: Rex at one point defends his work by saying that he protects people and property, only to quickly amend that he doesn't do as much of the latter.

It seems to be limited by his mechanical knowledge of whatever it is he's operating. He's able to power up or power down any machine easily, though anything more takes time and effort.

** [[Idiot Hero]]: [[Subverted Trope|Subverted.]] Despite his [[Totally Radical]] mannerisms and eccentric behavior, Rex, while not the smartest guy, definitely isn't dumb, and has played [[Batman Gambit|Batman]] [[Xanatos Speed Chess|Speed Chess]] with the big bad on several occasions. Also, he's a highly advanced student of mathematics, and seems have a working knowledge of his weapons' mechanics.

* [[Power Nullifier]]: He can "shut down" other Evos, permanently reverting them to human form. Unfortunately for him, some Evos are incurable.
* [[Psychoactive Powers]]: If Rex loses confidence, his constructs begin to malfunction and may fall apart.

* [[Shapeshifter Baggage]]: Justified as of "Frostbite". He cures other Evos by drawing their nanites into himself. That's where the extra mass comes from. Once he's drawn in too many to handle, Providence has facilities to remove the excess baggage. It's also been shown that creating his machines does in fact increase his weight.
* [[Shapeshifter Weapon]]: He doesn't ''have'' one so much as he ''is'' one.
* [[Shipper on Deck]]: With time, {{spoiler|for Six and Holiday}}.
* [[Smug Super]]: Rex is a mild version of this. Being a teenager with superpowers, it's not exactly surprising.

* [[Taught By Experience]]: By the third season it's apparent that Rex is an asset not only because of his combat and curing abilities, but also because of his extensive knowledge of Evo habits and ability to take advantage of them.

* [[Took a Level in Badass]]: In an interesting twist for a western cartoon, even some of the most dangerous members of Rex's [[Rogues Gallery]] pose less and less of a threat to him as the series goes on. There are exceptions,  {{spoiler|But the [[Big Bad]] Van Kleiss isn't one of them.}}
* [[Totally Radical]]: Justifed, since he has no memory more than about 18 months back, a lot of what he does may just be what he thinks normal teens do - and he probably learned from television since he's always around adults. No other teen in the series acts remotely like this, either.

He's garnered the attention of at least ''six'' girls in two seasons, though notably one is his villain's misguided [[Dark Chick]], another is the same villain's other Dark Chick who trapped him in a creepy pocket dimension, and the most normal of the girls is a disaster magnet. Long story short, emphasis on "Harem," extra emphasis for "Unwanted."
* [[What You Are in the Dark]]: To a lesser extent, episode five. When outside Providence, he starts stopping random Evo attacks.
* [[You Fight Like a Cow]]: Rex will ALWAYS come up with a smart-ish remark, no matter the situation. In over two seasons worth of episodes, there are extremely few, possibly only one, times that he doesn't snark. It is in fact confirmed to be an act that he puts on to cope with fear.

A senior-level operative for Providence, Six is literally the sixth deadliest man on the planet. Highly skilled in every form of combat and trained in methods of intrigue, Six is the ultimate bodyguard to Rex. His stoic nature and lightning-fast mind have made him a prized operative and explain why he was given the assignment of helping Rex learn how to utilize his powerful abilities. Unfortunately, Six doesn't have much patience for undisciplined partners, unreliable machines and especially smart-mouth teenagers! So from the onset, Rex and Six have an abrasive "odd couple" relationship.

* [[Amnesiac Dissonance]]: {{spoiler|Six of six years ago is willing to kill on a whim, fancies himself a ladies' man (probably not unjustifiably so), and isn't a team player. Thankfully, it doesn't take too much to get him to work his way back to present Six.}}

One of the earliest Providence captures, Bobo is an intelligent monkey who can speak his mind. Despite his darker origins, Bobo has chosen to fight for good in his own gruff way. Bobo is always by Rex's side and fiercely loyal to the boy who saved him. Bobo sports a "shoot then aim" attitude towards every situation that he and Rex find themselves in and is constantly giving absurd advice to Rex, encouraging his more mischievous side.

Noah is in every way a regular kid, except for one thing: he is secretly employed by Providence to be Rex's friend. This deception ultimately weighs heavily on Noah, who genuinely likes Rex. Noah provides a dose of reality and normalcy in Rex's life and is there for him, whether it's to play a game of basketball or to offer advice.

* [[The Ace]]: It's eventually shown that Noah does in fact have his act together very well, being popular, intelligent, and surprisingly well-connected in school and life, as well as being a veteran, if not well practiced, combatant. Rex, by contrast, is a clumsy goof around people his age.

Genius scientist extraordinaire, Doctor Holiday works for Providence as tech support, but her main focus though, is Rex. She monitors his emotions, the state of the nanites inside him and his general health. Holiday has taken a much more maternal interest in Rex, and seems to be the only person at Providence who truly cares for his emotional well-being. Holiday is not afraid to speak her mind and though she respects authority, she answers first and foremost to science. She's quickwitted, clever and direct. It's almost always impossible to pull something over on Holiday.

The Agent in charge at Providence, his ultimate quest is to rid the world of E.V.O.s (Exponentially Variegated Organism). White harbors an almost irrational fear of nanites, to the point where he never leaves his stark white office, which also doubles as a high-tech nanite-free clean room. As far as anyone can tell he never leaves the sterilized room he calls an office, as apparent by his flour white skin and that he keeps a jar of milk in a drawer. While there is not exactly a heart of gold hidden beneath his gruff exterior, he does genuinely want to do the right thing, and is often faced with making really tough decisions. Once a friend and partner of Six, their relationship is showing signs of serious strain.

** He's [[Character Development|stepping down a bit.]] He can be reasonable, and it's shown that he is a competent, if stern and cynical, leader.

He possesses the ability to control everything in his Kingdom Abysus but out of his territory he cannot use his powers. He knows a great deal about the Nanites which causes Evo Mutations and about Rex's past (implying he had a hand in his mutation) he states that he will tell Rex everything but only if Rex joins his team.

* [[Achilles' Heel]]: He is powerless unless he is on his native soil. He spends a lot of time trying to get around this, while at the same time exploiting his own weakness so people won't think he's a threat.
