Genius Loci/Playing With

Basic Trope: A location, usually the setting of a work, is sentient.

Straight: The city that Alice and Bob live in is sentient.
Exaggerated: The entire universe is sentient.
Downplayed: Only a small area of Alice's house is sentient.
Justified: A spell was cast on the place.
Inverted: Not only is the magic forest not an intelligent being, it drains the intelligence of any creature that enters it.
Subverted: Alice and Bob refer to their city as "she", but this turns out to be an actual way to refer to places sometimes.
Double Subverted: The city is actually sentient.
Parodied: The city gets "angry" and bad things happen when referred to as "it".
Zig Zagged:
Averted: There are no sentient locations in the work.
Enforced: Every location eventually develops sapience and will.
Lampshaded: "Wow, this city seems like it's really ALIVE!"
Invoked: "This spell will make the forest a single thinking creature."
Exploited: Alice and Bob get the city to make things happen in their favor.
Defied: Alice and Bob move to a city that is not sentient.
