Genius Loci/Playing With
Basic Trope: A location, usually the setting of a work, is sentient.
- Straight: The city that Alice and Bob live in is sentient.
- Exaggerated: The entire universe is sentient.
- Downplayed: Only a small area of Alice's house is sentient.
- Justified: A spell was cast on the place.
- Inverted: Not only is the magic forest not an intelligent being, it drains the intelligence of any creature that enters it.
- Subverted: Alice and Bob refer to their city as "she", but this turns out to be an actual way to refer to places sometimes.
- Double Subverted: The city is actually sentient.
- Parodied: The city gets "angry" and bad things happen when referred to as "it".
- Zig Zagged:
- Averted: There are no sentient locations in the work.
- Enforced: Every location eventually develops sapience and will.
- Lampshaded: "Wow, this city seems like it's really ALIVE!"
- Invoked: "This spell will make the forest a single thinking creature."
- Exploited: Alice and Bob get the city to make things happen in their favor.
- Defied: Alice and Bob move to a city that is not sentient.
