Simply put, the Golden Path is the ideal path through a Video Game -- usually but not always an RPG and frequently a Wide Open Sandbox -- that yields the best results for the player. This can be any combination of plot elements, setting details, encounters, loot or even character survival which add up to a quantifiable "best" course to take. Where other routes may explain a specific aspect of the story, the Golden Path will usually includes details or explanations lacking in them, like introducing a long-forgotten kingdom. The Golden Path may also avoid otherwise "inevitable" events which can have a negative impact on the character or party, for example sparing two of the playable characters in Grand Theft Auto V. And in games with Multiple Endings, the Golden Path usually leads to the Golden Ending.

Golden Paths can also be very rewarding in single-ending games, allowing the player to maximize his abilities and advantages.
