These things about James Gunn are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

Awesome Music: His films have great taste in music, including the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Creator Worship: Especially after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, MCU fans and cinephiles in general gain interest in anything he is involved with. The news he would direct the semi-sequel to the critically panned but successful Suicide Squad movie was received very positively.
Friendly Fandoms: Since he worked with Zack Snyder for Dawn of the Dead, some fans like both filmmakers.
Overshadowed by Controversy: Some still won't forgive Gunn after problematic tweets resurfaced in 2018.
