• Crowning Moment of Awesome / Crowning Moment of Funny: A racist customer at Lefty's bar tells him to "go back to [his] own country" Lefty replies: "This IS my country." And then Cal narrates, "And to prove it, he did a very American thing: he reached beneath the counter and produced a gun."
• Squick: A lot, especially the incest.
• Unfortunate Implications: One advocacy group for intersex awareness pointed out how it was unfortunate that Cal's condition is a result of incest because of the "shameful, pathological and criminal repercussions" of incest and the implication that intersex people are degenerate. Given how sympathetically Cal was written this was almost certainly not Eugenide's intention.
  • Not only Cal, but his grandparents are shown as sympathetic, three-dimentional characters. What's more, the author claims that he used incest in plot just to allow mutation to activate as early as in third generation of Stephanides family.
