Perhaps because he noticed this, later stories set in Lescatier heavily toned-down the initial baggage the cast had.

And as for the Chief God, she wanted the world to retain balance between the humanoid races and the monsters (she's basically a Malthusian, YMMV on whether that guy was right but still...) So really, it's just two extremists having a [[Understatement|"disagreement."]] They aren't necessarily utterly evil, just misguided.
