Mrs. Pollifax (franchise)/Headscratchers

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Mrs. Pollifax is a freelance spy. How does she get paid for her services? Does she get paid? The books never mention these arrangements; one would hope she does get paid (generously!), and that the CIA covered her medical costs in the wake of things like her torture in Hong Kong.
    • For all that she lives in a small apartment for the first six books, Mrs. Pollifax seems to be reasonably well off: her late husband was a lawyer, and her various international jaunts don't seem to raise eyebrows among her friends or children except for her choices of destinations. Perhaps she does it all pro bono.
