*** This. It would not even have destroyed the plot, since they could have found reason to look down on her anyway, but it feels rather fitting behavior for vain and status-conscious Rarity.

*** Because while Rarity does a bit of bragging during her song, she's clearly only singing it to herself. You'll notice she doesn't do much direct bragging of "I'm so great, I'm so marvelous, I make such wonderful things" to the others... in fact she generally tries to be modest to some extent. "Hey guys, I saved your ass from a possessed night-goddess and a chaos demon.", though true, would put her squarely in the braggart column. Not only does it not fit for Rarity too well, blatant bragging often doesn't go over too well at winning affection.

* Fridge Brilliance: Fancypants clearly comes to Rarity's "rescue" at the end of the day, but there's a few hints that he might have known Rarity to be "rustic" when they first bumped into each other, such as him immediately wanting to introduce her to the upper class. It's possible that he did this intentionally, much the same way that Celestia invited the Mane Cast to the Grand Galloping Gala, to help break the monotony of upper class life (and possibly even to put the more snotty ones in their place). During the derby scene, you can see Fancypants give a knowing look to Rarity, and when the party is crashed by the Mane Cast, he doesn't even pause before welcoming them.

** It may seem a bit odd that Applejack would not know what a "garden party" was, given even her brief exposure to the upper class as a filly. However, keep in mind that AJ's Aunt and Uncle Orange were high-life society from Manehatten; they're less likely to have garden parties compared to the upper classes of Europe, instead having events like fancy dinners and balls.

** Fluttershy has learned that acting serenely like a tree is likely a better way to attract the Canterlot wildlife than forcing them to love her.

** Some of the elite ponies manage to talk Rarity into coming to their events by begging, saying how much her being there would mean. They made it seem like she'd be a big help being there (which if you pay attention, she WAS). Rarity has always had a problem getting in over her head when people ask her for help.

*** She is the Element of Generosity, after all. She also spends much of this episode being somewhat generous with the truth.
