- Miis are playable.
- The numerous throwbacks to Super Mario World, a nice change of pace after the ones to Super Mario Bros 3 found in New Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.
- The first player can finally play as someone other than Mario.
- Its the Same So It Sucks: Despite it shaping up to have its own identity, this game gets called out for not bringing out "the full potential of the Wii U".
