• Acceptable Targets: one of the characters ends up going to prom with his short, homely, overweight friend, and this is supposed to be played for laughs.
  • She's his stepsister, and their date is actually played pretty sweetly.
• Heartbroken Badbutt: Jesse, after Nova's father orders him not to take her to prom. Especially shown when he picks a fight with three dudes who caused problems for his mom's restaurant.

You see me now?

• Jerk Sue: Nova belittles Jesse for being so upset about his parental abandonment, and he is the one who apologizes for pointing out to her how silly her obsession with prom is.
• So Okay It's Average: The movie isn't great, but it isn't really awful either. Just really generic and predictable.
