Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ; Irish for "Radio, Television of Ireland") is Ireland's state broadcaster.

Radio

2RN was first broadcast in 1925 (3 years after The BBC): the first voice on Irish radio was Séamus Clandillon's, saying, "Seo Raidió 2RN, Baile Átha Cliath ag teastáil", Irish for "This is Radio 2RN, Dublin calling." The station later became Radio Éireann.

Today, RTÉ broadcasts:

  • RTÉ Radio 1 (music, news, talk)
  • 2FM (pop, rock)
  • RTÉ lyric fm (classical, jazz, world music, arts)
  • RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta (Irish language, traditional music)

Television

Telefís Éireann was launched on New Year's Eve, 1961. Colour broadcasting began in 1969, and a second channel was launched in 1978. Today, RTÉ broadcasts:

  • RTÉ One (news, soaps, drama, arts)
  • RTÉ Two (cartoons, comedy, imported shows)
  • RTÉ Jr (young childrens' programming)
  • RTÉ News Now (rerunning recent news and current affairs shows throughout the day)
