Rumble Fish/Awesome

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • The first fight scene with Rusty James and Biff Wilcox. While Outsiders both, book and movie, are the definitive examples of a serious gang Rumble, this movie tops it off. Rusty James faces Biff with both their gangs backing each other up. With Rusty James daring Biff to take a swing at him. Biff instead threatens him with a knife. Rusty James managed to get a few hits on him and even restrain Biff while he was still armed, but it's clear that Biff really pissed Rusty off for not even remotely trying to fight one on one. To avoid Biff's cronies, Rusty james swings across the grounds on a rope knocking over a burning garbage can. Which he proceeds to take a two by four out of, beating Biff while berating him for using a knife. Once he disarms him, Rusty James disarms himself kicking Biff, before grabbing him and tossing him through a near by window. Biff, not one to give up, takes the biggest shard of Glass he can get his hands on. Said shard being over 3 feet long and looking like an Axe in his hand. However Rusty James was still able to dodge and disarm him, before beating him to submission. It looked like Rusty James would have won if he wasn't distracted by the Motorcycle Boy's return.
  • The Motorcycle Boy himself is no slouch. Upon returning, everyone on both sides of the fight back away. Rusty James even stops fighting. He was about to reprimand Rusty for violating a truce he established, that forbade gang fights. However while Rusty James was distracted, Biff Wilcox slashes at his side with a shard of glass, taunting him as he walks off, only just realizing he hurt Rusty James in front of his older brother. While Biff tries to run for it, Motorcycle Boy chases him down, throttle locks his motorcycle and lets it loose after Biff, knocking him down. Since we never see him again afterwards, it's uncertain whether or not Biff died from the impact. Upon destroying Biff, Motorcycle Boy and Steve take Rusty James home to patch him up.
  • The flim's ending for both Rusty James and Motorcycle Boy. As it turns out, Motorcycle Boy came back to Tulsa because he wanted to do one more thing before the Cops inevitably arrest or kill him. That thing being taking a fish tank with Siamese Fighting Fish and dumping them in the river. The titular Rumble Fish of the movie. He believes that while they'd kill each other in the tank, that if they had more space to move, the fish would instead try to avoid each other in favor of their freedom. Believing that's how the gangs should live from now on. At first Rusty James comes with him to try to talk him out of it, however it was too late. The damage was done and Motorcycle Boy not only breaks the pet store in to steal the fish, but also free the other pets in the store. He demands Rusty James to take his motorcycle and travel along the river side to California and don't stop until he reaches the ocean. The cops are alerted to the noise and they gun down Motorcycle Boy, causing the fish tank to fall and the fish going on the verge of death. It seems all hope has been lost, until Rusty James fulfills his brother's last goal and puts the fish in the river against the Cops' protest. To his surprise, his brother was right and rather than fight each other, the fish swim away to freedom. The cops try to restrain Rusty James, causing him to rage out and beat the patrol car so badly the film briefly changes from black and white to color, before switching back when he breaks the window. They were gonna slap the cuffs on him when Officer Patterson, in a surprising sight of sympathy, tells them to let him go. Using the excuse that he's upset about watching his brother die. Taking the hint, Rusty James takes the bike and rides clear to the pacific ocean.
