* [[Base Breaker]]: Much like almost every other interpretation of her, Sally divides the fanbase of the show completely in half. Her [[Spotlight-Stealing Squad|upgraded role]] in the Second Season didn't help much.
* [[Complete Monster]]: [[Big Bad|Dr. Julian Robotnik]] is a ruthless, [[Ambition Is Evil|ambitious]] [[Chronic Backstabbing Disorder|backstabber]] with a series of treacherous moves to his count [[It's All About Me|in the name of self-interest]]. Robotnik's first betrayal was his sealing of the evil wizard Ixis Naugus in the Void. Later becoming known to the King of Mobius, Robotnik became instrumental in the King's own military victories before deciding to [[The Usurper|take over Mobius himself]]. Staging a coup d'état and overthrowing the King from Mobotropolis, Robotnik stole the technologies of the Roboticizer from Charles Hedgehog, and used it to forcefully convert almost all of Mobius into [[Crapsack World|a polluted dystopia]], with him as [[Evil Overlord|supreme ruler]] from the newly named Robotropolis. Reducing most of Mobius's inhabitants to his robotic slaves through a [[Mind Rape|horrific roboticization and mental enslavement process]], Robotnik made fierce enemies with Charles's nephew [[The Hero|Sonic]] and the rest of [[La Resistance|the Freedom Fighters.]] Robotnik would demonstrate [[The Caligula|his psychopathic nature]] again and again, attempting to kill, torture, or otherwise roboticize the Freedom Fighters, happily willing to jeopardize the ecosystem in doing so. Robotnik also [[Bad Boss|coldly abuses his own minions]], his diminutive, weak-willed nephew Snively among them, and condemns them all to die for the sake of his own life in the finale. An emotion-deficient fear-monger with nary a comedic quirk to his name, Robotnik proved [[Adaptational Villainy|one of the most vicious incarnations of Robotnik seen in the franchise.]]
* [[Creator's Pet]]: Both Dulcy and Sally were stated to be favorites of Ben Hurst, main writer for most of the second season. They also have a rather [[Base Breaker|"conflicted"]] reception with the fanbase to say the least.

* [[Designated Villain]]: What kind of bad things did Naugus actually do? He didn't do anything seriously bad in the series. Sure, he kidnaps Sally and Bunnie so he could lure Sonic into the Void and then tricks him to get him out of the Void, but wouldn't most people do it if they were trapped in a wasteland for years and then saw the opportunity to get out? He did allow Sonic to take them back after he was out of the Void. And the only one whose life he wants to make difficult is Dr. Robotnik, the [[Big Bad]]. The only reason we saw him as a villain was because of [[Word of God]]. Granted, he was supposed to become the next big bad in season 3 but that idea was screwed.
** His goal to escape were sympathetic but [[Knight Templar|his methods of escape were somewhat skewed]], deceiving the Freedom Fighters by posing as the King, not to mention routinely encasing any one in frozen crystal that becomes a slight annoyance. While just deciding to ditch him and leave him in the Void after explaining his motives may have been a bit callous it may have been slightly justified given he had shown how potentially unstable he was in luring them unwillingly into the Void. As the third season also suggested, his ambitions outside revenge on Robotnik were also yet to be revealed.
*** It is understandable for him to be how he was. He was trapped in the Void for over 10 years, with only King Maximillian in charge. Not to mention the aformentioned betrayal by Robotnik. After all that time, it's no wonder he's callous.
* [[Flanderization]]: Antoine's cowardice and obnoxiousness, to the point of becoming a [[Too Dumb to Live|brainless]] [[Dirty Coward]].
** Sonic originally just somewhat [[Book Dumb]] and [[Deadpan Snarker|snarky]] evolved more into an obnoxious [[Idiot Hero]].
** Snively's (and to a lesser extent Robotnik's) [[Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain|blundering traits]].
* [[Fridge Horror]]: Dulcy's non-sequiturs about her mom become tragic when you learn she's nearly the [[Last of Her Kind]].
* [[In Name Only]]: Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, Buzzbombers, Rings, and the basic, general story concept are literally the only things this series has in common with the games after ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (video game)|Sonic 1.]]''

** "Blast To The Past part 2" has several, back to back.
** Bunnie reverting back to her half-metal body after what turned out to be a temporary de-robotization. She may be [[Cursed with Awesome]], but the palpable pain and sorrow she lets out when she breaks down after changing back, you would have to be completely soulless not to feel.
* [[They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character]]: Bunnie Rabbot made interesting use of the show's robotocization concept and had kickass cyborg powers to boot. However she had a supporting role in the majority of the first season and was [[Demoted to Extra]] in the second, arguably getting the least amount of development time out of the rest of the Freedom Fighters (keeping in mind Rotor and Tails were also heavily [[Out of Focus]] for most of the show's later run). The comics adapted from the show utilize her a bit more, but still play her as one of the more minor leads.
* [[Unfortunate Implications]]: Part of the premise of the "Sonic and Sally" episode appears to be [[Adults Are Useless]] at its worst.
* [[Villain Decay]]: Robotnik debuted as a [[Dangerously Genre Savvy]] [[Evil Overlord]] with a deathly serious attitude in stark contrast to his [[Laughably Evil]] persona in most other enterpretations. In the second season, while still somewhat fearsome, Robotnik gains more buffoonish qualities and also falls for [[Bond Villain Stupidity]] on several occasions due to his obsession with destroying Sonic.
* [[What Do You Mean It's for Kids?]]: How some respond to this. [[Ridiculously Cute Critter|Cute animal]] [[Child Soldier|soldiers]] fighting a war to [[La Résistance|de-throne]] a [[Magnificent Bastard|depraved]] [[Dangerously Genre Savvy|genius]] who is resposible for [[Omnicidal Maniac|genocide]] of [[After the End|Apocalyptic porportions.]] And all of the [[Double Standard|girls]] [[Parent Service|have boobs]]. Kids indeed!
* [[The Woobie]]: Most characters had their moments of this. Sonic and Sally sure did, but Bunnie is the biggest contender by a long shot given her back story and even more so in the comics.
** [[Jerkass Woobie]]: Antoine is a self centered Dirty Coward, but his constant failed attempts at respect and heroism (and [[Smug Super|Sonic's]] [[Jerk Jock|relentless jokes at his expense]]) make you feel some sympathy for him. After all, [[This Loser Is You|not everyone can be heroic]].
*** Snively for the most part is suggested to be as [[Lack of Empathy|remorseless]] and ruthless as [[Complete Monster|Robotnik]], still you have to pity the overwelming amount of abuse he has supposedly suffered from his uncle (who is embarrassed to even acknowledge their relation) for ''over a decade''. The fact the Freedom Fighters often trigger Robotnik's [[You Have Failed Me...|wrath onto him]] (at one point Sonic seemed to acknowledge and even laugh about it) probably gives a valid excuse as to why he isn't sympathetic towards them.
