Seems to be standard villainy at first, until you learn of the reason why he planned to eradicate his own colony. His goal is not so much "ambition" as it is "purification"; he considers the worker ants weak-willed, undisiplined and uncomitted vermin, so he plans to build a new colony filled with (what he views as) the ideal ant.
