Even if no one is paying him anymore, major criminal syndicates threaten him, he's nearly killed by an assassin, or he finds himself at odds with the U.S. government, Spenser will bumble his way to the case's conclusion.
* [[Distressed Damsel in Distress]]: Susan spends a number of the later novels as a potential target for whoever Spenser's managed to annoy that week. Spenser's typical reaction is to bury her office in trusted gunmen. This, naturally, irritates her to no end.
