"''What?''" — '''both''' of them say, in perfect astonished unison. An author's note revealed that Lackey borrowed this fellow, with permission, from tabletop RPG ''Stalking the Night Fantastic'', which is a sort of 1983 version of the ''[[The X-Files]]'' concept.
