** The mismatched prez/vice prez combinations were caused by the fact that originally the two positions were determined by two separate elections. Thus, a candidate from one party could win the presidential election, but the candidate from the opposing party could win the vice presidential election. This practice was stopped when it became obvious that having the President and VP opposing each other was a bad idea.
