Well, for starters, "geography" is the term for the study of the Earth's physical features. "Place" would be more like the ACTUAL physical feature. In other words, if you want to study or analyze a "place", (likely a large one) you'd use your knowledge of "geography"
Also, "place" is a far broader term, it could mean something as small as a room in a house, the actual house, the town the house is in, and so on. "Geography" tends to encompass a far wider spectrum.
