Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Urusei Yatsura fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in The Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

General Fics

Urusei Yatsura: The Senior Year by Fred Herriot and Mike Smith (some mature themes and homosexuality).

  • Recommended by Robbie, seconded by Genki Girl
  • Synopsis: Starting from where the end of the manga left off, a series of events causes Ataru to leave Tomobiki to wrest control of his life: actions that hold certain consequences for the rest of the Tomobiki gang to deal with, especially Lum...
  • Comments: Possibly one of the best known Urusei Yatsura fanfics out there, this epic story spans about 50 chapters split into seven books (and that's not even including the side chapters and sequels!), and carries a scope that rivals your average Eyrie Production. The series has also been cited as controversial for a couple of reasons: a large amount of gay characters, and the treatment and characterisation of the canon characters. This troper doesn't recommend this fanfic because he enjoys it, but because it's such a large part of Urusei Yatsura fanfic as a whole.
    • I'd have to agree with Robbie on this one: while incredibly original, detailed, and epic, the stories take the main characters in a direction which either appears completely justified or horribly spiteful, and that's just in the first ten stories. The stories are incredibly long, and to understand them all fully they should be read in order. It is a huge part of written fanon, so checking it out is helpful, but no one ever said UY characterization was governed by it. Its big issue is not so much homosexuality as its harsh view of the characters. Yes, most of the characters have done extreme things and acted like huge assholes, but this series was (a) experimental in almost every sense of the word and (b) a frigging comedy. In my opinion, Ataru's sudden cruelty is disturbing and uncomfortable, because while he is pointing out others' legitimate faults, he is also flawed, or he was. The rectification of his personal and personality problems makes it OK for him to insult countless characters? Plus, if you like Lum, she's going to be called out a lot early on. A LOT. I recommend it for understanding the fanon better, but I disagree with its harsh view of the show universe and will not be finishing it.

Lum Gets Grounded by crazyjw18.

  • Recommended by User:Weird Beard, Seconded by Genki Girl
  • Synopsis: After Lum discovers that her infamous electric shocks may be dangerous to Ataru's health, their relationship starts turning in a new direction.
  • Comments: Set sometime after the manga/5th movie. The story is well-paced, with a good mixture of action, romance and adventure. It's also respectful to the characters, although Megane gets put on a bus "off-camera" after a fairly-intense scene.
    • It is indeed respectful to the characters, and some of the obviously logical thought processes behind the story's twists and turns are explained through the narrative itself. The relationship development is sweet and feels natural, and altogether the story works well. I believe it to be the best UY fanfic I've ever read.
