Tanaka Manabu is a regular honors student. On the way to school, he meets a girl carrying a bloody bat. That girl is Ryuuzaki Reina, leader of the school's female delinquents. It's love at first sight. ''Yandere Kanojo'' is a gag manga (with a combination of [[Yonkoma]] and normal page) about having a yankee dere-dere girlfriend.

 

* [[Adorkable]]: Shiratori thinks he's popular with girls because he's so cool. In reality, he's popular with the girls because they find how easily-flustered he gets when they flirt with him adorable.

* [[All Gays Are Promiscuous]]: Shuuei Mori. In his introductory chapter, the first thing he says to every guy he meets is "Hey, wanna go to a hotel later?".

** To put it simply, it WOULDN'T be a big problem if the guy saying it was NOT a [[The Stoic|Stoic one]].

* [[Anti-Hero]]: The [[Magical Girl]] Princess Mamii, if her eagerness to [[Shoot the Hostage]] is anything to go by.

* [[At Arm's Length]]: Reina does this to Nanami the first time they fight.

* [[Author Appeal]]: The author likes characters that look tough, but aren't, and who have 'evil eyes' - hence Reina's dad. Similarly, because he likes old guys, he included Manabu's grandad.

* [[Curb Stomp Battle]]: The Kendo Club shows up to defend the school from a possessed Reina, which ends exactly how you'd expect it to. Then the Judo Club shows up only to suffer the same fate.

* [[Dreadful Musician]]: Kuroko. She can't move on to the next world till someone recognizes the music she's playing, but she plays so badly it's impossible. {{spoiler|She apparently remembers what it was at the end of her introductory story, but sticks around.}}

* [[Elephant in the Living Room]]: Tanaka's relationship with his parents. He's told mutually conflicting stories and at least one outright lie (about his grandfather and Mayami not getting along).

** Except when the bears are Grizzlies (chapter 28.1), then this trope is played straight... until Reina sacks it [[Attack Its Weak Point|in the knee]], then the bear relents and [[Defeat Means Friendship|shows her some respect]].

** It goes right back to Shiratori's first appearance in chapter 3. Shiratori and Reina make a bet; if Manabu wins, Shiratori has to eat spaghetti through his nose, while if Shiratori wins, Reina owes him a date. When Reina starts freaking out afterwards, Manabu says he'll go on the date instead.

** In chapter 35, Reina notes Manabu gets obsessed over whatever he targets (in this case, Shiratori).

* [[I Want My Beloved to Be Happy]]: [[Played for Laughs]] in chapter 29. Ran (Reina's mother) suspects that her husband Kouichirou's odd behavior means he's having an affair (it turns out he's actually hanging out with Manabu's grandfather). The following exchange occurs:

** Inverted personality-wise with Manabu. His serious personality comes from growing up as his grandfather's straight man. He's been noted to ''look'' quite a bit like him, though.

* [[Japanese Delinquents]]: Reina before falling for Manabu. Her old friends still. Nanami and her gang. Her mom at Reina's age.

* [[Kansai Regional Accent]]: Nanami has one so strong that it's practically a character trait.

* [[Skirt Over Slacks|Kimono Over Boxers]]: [[All Men Are Perverts|A crowd of male onlookers]] collectively drops to their knees in grief after Reina denies them a [[Panty Shot]], or something even better, this way while celebrating a badminton victory a little too enthusiastically.

** It's not a matter of Reina being a lethal chef, [[One-Note Cook|it's more that Reina only knows how to make curry, and applies it to EVERYTHING ELSE.]]

* [[Locked in a Room]]: Hijiri and Shiratori get locked in a storage closet. [[Genre Savvy|They're quickly rescued, though, since Hijiri told a teacher she'd be working in the closet with the faulty lock.]]

* [[Love At First Sight]]: Manabu and Reina mutually fall in love at first sight in the first 4-Koma, allowing a convenient [[Averted Trope|aversion]] of [[Will They or Won't They?]].

** Nanami falls for Manabu the first time she manages to get a look at his face.

* [[Men Are Strong, Women Are Pretty]]: Reina's a delinquent who gets into fights on a daily basis. Manabu's an honor student with pretty much no athletic tendencies whatsoever. Yet, when they do their [[Freaky Friday Flip]], Reina (in Manabu's body) has to hold back when she hits him to avoid seriously injuring Manabu (in Reina's body). [[Justified Trope|Possibly justified]] or lampshaded in that getting hit by Reina whenever she gets surprised or flustered has gotten Manabu into much better shape.

** Reina's dad is also one, but his [[Shrinking Violet]] status, combined with [[Face of a Thug]], means he gets mistaken as a mean guy.

* [[Not So Stoic]]: Manabu only ever loses his cool when his grandpa is involved, even noting that's probably the only time that happens.

* [[Odd Friendship]]: Manabu's grandfather and Reina's dad have become friends and keep in touch regularly, despite being total opposites in terms of outgoingness.

* [[Official Couple]]: Manabu and Reina's relationship is pretty much the entire point of the manga.

* [[Ojou]]: Sumika's the daughter of a CEO.

* [[Pitbull Dates Puppy]]: Our [[Official Couple]], [[Generation Xerox|as well as Reina's parents]].

* [[Post-Kiss Catatonia]]: As mentioned under [[Ship Tease]] below, a kiss on the ''cheek'' from Drunk!Hijiri was enough to cause this in Shiratori.

** A whole chapter is actually devoted to exploring the mystery of Manabu's glasses. Long story short, {{spoiler|they're basically a [[Memento MacGuffin]] from his grandfather.}}

* [[Recursive Canon]]: The manga and author exist in the manga's universe. None of the main characters know them.

* [[Relationship Upgrade]]: In a roundabout way, chapter 27 has Hijiri and Shiratori acknowledging each other's mutual attraction and going out on a date.

* [[The Resenter]]: This was a large part of the motivation for Shiratori's rivalry with Manabu; he resented Manabu for his grades and social abilities, and also because he seemingly ignored him.

** The flashback chapters to how she and Reina's dad fell in love somehow make her out to be even more violent, feared, and hot-tempered than Reina. There's implications she may have even ''killed'' people.

* [[Rose-Haired Girl]]: Tsukihitsugi.

** [[Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy]]

* [[Secret Relationship]]: At least initially (see [[Tsundere]] further down), but as the series goes on it becomes more of an [[Open Secret]], if even that, especially with Manabu and Reina not bothering to hide it in front of any named characters, who all know about it.

* [[She Cleans Up Nicely]]: Reina and Manabu have a mutual moment of this when they meet up wearing yukatas at the festival.

* [[Shoot the Hostage]]: A [[Show Within a Show]] has the magical girl heroine [http://www.mangafox.com/manga/yandere_kanojo/v03/c018.1/12.html kill hostages just to get to the villain]. She even has a specific hostage-killer attack.

** The weapons shop chapter has a couple - [[Higurashi no Naku Koro ni|Rena's cleaver]] makes an appearance and the owner prices everything in [[Final Fantasy|Gil]] (which converts to yen at 10 yen = 1 gil). The owner himself is directly stated to look like [[Dragon Quest III|Kandar]].

** In the [[Freaky Friday Flip]] chapter, there's the "Hurion Mixer", a Shout Out to "Hurricane Mixer", Buffaloman's finishing move in [[Kinnikuman]]. Buffaloman's face even appears, [[Lawyer-Friendly Cameo|but his eyes are censored.]]

*** Then there's the Kinniku Driver in the pacifism chapter.

*** After being bitten by Tiny in Chapter 37.1, Manabu has teeth marks on his face that make him "look like Buffaloman".

** The chapter introducing Akira is entitled, "Femininity, that is, [[My Fair Lady]]". Sure enough, for the opening page, Akira is wearing the same outfit as Eliza Doolittle.

** The landlady of Shuu's new apartment is an exact copy of Otonashi Kyouko from [[Maison Ikkoku]], right down to the cutesy animal apron.

** The cats in chapter 37.1 act like the cats from [[Azumanga Daioh]] around Sakaki. Well, to be fair, Chibita attacks first...

** [[Neon Genesis Evangelion|"A Cruel Caste System's Thesis".]]

* [[Stern Teacher]]: The Principal. Borderline [[Sadist Teacher]] if not for the fact that he treats students who follow rules, including "redeemed" delinquents, with utmost respect.

** In chapter 36.1, it is shown that he's quite a [[Reasonable Authority Figure]], forgiving Tsukihitsugi for breaking his vase (which is a present from his students) since she apologizes and the vase is fixed (though he still hits Reina for taking supplies from his desk without permission). And from his story, it seems that he also likes to help students who have constructive hobbies.

* [[Super Drowning Skills]]: Reina swims like a rock. {{spoiler|Turns out Hijiri does too.}}

* [[That Came Out Wrong]]: Reina and Hijiri, while discussing Hijiri's crush (or, rather, lack thereof) in home ec:

** Shiratori seems to be platonically tsundere for Manabu, wanting to be his friend instead of significant other.

** Nanami gets a platonically tsundere moment over Reina in 27.1.

* [[Ugly Guy, Hot Wife]]: Reina's parents. Her dad isn't ''that'' ugly, but anyone who doesn't know the couple might think they're mismatched.

** Ironically, having the [[Face of a Thug]] is what attracted her to him in the first place.

** Nanami and her gang definitely count, as Reina just sees her as a pest rather than an actual threat.

* [[Violently Protective Girlfriend]]: Reina. She's pretty protective of her friends generally, but god help you if you mess with Manabu. [[The Stoic|Even if Manabu himself doesn't care.]]

** Like many of Reina's traits, it comes from her mother. In one story, Ran ''crucifies'' a solicitor for wasting Kouichirou's time while they're on a date, while in another, she threatens his entire class if they cause him trouble.

* [[What Does She See in Him?]]: Manabu's a relatively ordinary-looking guy. Reina seems to think he's on the male supermodel/"legendary man-whore" end of the spectrum.

** During the high school days of Reina's parents, Ran (Reina's mom) fainted after Kouichirou (Reina's dad) smiled at her. The effect of the smile was so profound it made her deredere side the dominant one. Note that Ran was one of the most feared delinquents in her neighborhood during her time.

* [[Whole-Episode Flashback]]: Reina's parents' first meeting, and Sumika and Nanami's first meeting, both get two chapters.
