For the uninformed, the Hamptons are on the far eastern end of Long Island, at least a hundred miles -- if not more -- east-southeast of the southernmost locations anyone would reasonably refer to as "upstate". More succinctly, one goes ''north'' from New York City to go "upstate", and ''east'' to get to the Hamptons.
