  • Freud Was Right: It's been widely remarked that the instrumental prelude seems to feature a deliberately awkward climactic moment, when the orchestra (particularly the brass section) reaches the top of a crescendo too far ahead of the rhythm. The subtext becomes more obvious when the curtain goes up and the first scene features Octavian and the Marschallin in bed.
