"Doki Doki is not oki doki..."
—A common joke.

From the game

Yuri: Taking out your own insecurities on others like that... You really act as young as you look, Natsuki.
Natsuki: Me? Look who's talking, you wannabe edgy bitch!
Yuri: Edgy? Sorry that my lifestyle is too much for someone of your mental age to comprehend!
Natsuki: See?? Just saying that proves my point! Most people learn to get over themselves after they graduate middle school, you know.
Yuri: If you want to prove anything, then stop harassing others with your sickening attitude! You think you can counterbalance your toxic personality just by dressing and acting cute? The only cute thing about you is how hard you try.
Natsuki: Whoa, be careful or you might cut yourself on that edge, Yuri. Oh, my bad... You already do, don't you?
Yuri: D-Did you just accuse me of cutting myself?? What the fuck is wrong with your head?!
Natsuki: Yeah, go on! Let [him] hear everything you really think! I'm sure he'll be head over heel for you after this!

—Act 2

Act 3

"I felt really bad that you had to witness some nasty things. But I realized that you have the same perspective as I do...that it's all just some game.
And I knew you would get over it."

Monika, Act 3

"You know... This is just some kind of tacky romance game, right? I kinda have to ask... ...What made you consider even playing in the first place? Were you that lonely? I feel a little bad for you...
But I guess everything worked out perfectly in the end, for both of us. I got to meet you, and you're not lonely anymore... I can't help but feel like this was fate.
Don't you feel that way too?
I'm so happy we have this ending together."

"Hey, what's your favorite game? Mine is Doki Doki Literature Club! Ahaha! That was a joke. But if you tell me you like some other romance game better, I might get a little jealous~
—One of Monika's topics, Act 3

"You know, I hate to say it, but I think my biggest regret is that we couldn't finish our event at the festival. After we worked so hard to prepare and everything! I mean, I know I was focusing a lot on getting new members... But I was really excited for the performing part, too. It would have been so much fun to see everyone express themselves.
Of course, if we did end up getting any new members, I'd probably just end up deleting them anyway. Well...with the hindsight I have now, that is.
Gosh, it feels like I've kinda grown as a person ever since you've joined the club. You really helped inspire me to look at life from a new perspective.
Just another reason for me to love you."

—One of Monika's topics, Act 3

"I can't help but wonder how things would be different if the game just gave me a route in the first place... I think I would end up forcing you onto my route anyway. It has less to do with me not having a route, and more to do with me knowing that nothing is real.
I think the only difference would be that I may not have needed to take such drastic measures to be with you. Maybe the rest of the club would still be around... Not that it really matters. It all lost its meaning once I found out it wasn't real.
So I really don't miss those days or anything. I really don't...

—One of Monika's topics, Act 3

For years, I have been enamored by the ability of visual novels - and games in general, to tell stories in ways not possible using traditional media.
Doki Doki Literature Club is my love letter to that.

Dan Salvato, final message of the game (true ending)
