Edmund

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Edmund is an indie platformer game made by one Paul Greasely, about a subject that isn't explored too often in video games: rape. It follows the story of a taxi driver named Michael on the night he meets the eponymous character. After witnessing Edmund rape a woman at a bus stop, Michael gives chase, and the player discovers that there is much more to these two men than meets the eye.

As one might expect, this is a rather disturbing game. Those who aren't faint of heart can find it here, or watch a Let's Play of it here.

Tropes used in Edmund include:

  • Empathic Environment: It's raining pretty heavily during the modern-day segment, to fit the dreary mood.
  • Multiple Endings: At a couple points, you are given a choice between raping Emily or walking away. Doing the latter ends the game prematurely.
  • Rape as Backstory: With a twist. Michael was not the victim, but the perpetrator. The modern-day segment of the game deals with him fighting his guilt.
  • Rape as Drama: Pretty much the entire plot.
  • Rape by Proxy: Eddie tries this when he is finally cornered by Michael. The player chooses whether or not to comply.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: The point of the game, as well as the typical reaction from anyone who hears about it.
  • The Rapist In Me: To the horror of both Michael and the player.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Michael fought in Vietnam, and must come to terms with having raped a civilian woman.
  • Shoot Out the Lock: How you open doors.
  • Split Personality
