No, seriously, [[Word of God|Ed Logg has admitted this was the reason.]] Some companies at the time were trying to increase profit by increasing the price from 25 cents to 50, but this was an instant turn-off to players, and allowing more than one player at 25 cents each per play was much more profitable. While this is, of course, the reason behind any multiplayer arcade game, ''Gauntlet'' started the trend.
