Gauntlet (1985 video game)/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • He Also Did: Ed Logg was also on the development team for Asteroids, Super Breakout, and Centipede.
  • Franchise Killer: Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, which was released as an Obvious Beta with all of the touted new features conspicuously missing, as well most series staples from previous games, such as Bomb Potions and all power-ups.
    • What Could Have Been: The game had a very prestigious team at first, with the likes of John Romero and Josh Sawyer attached to it, and was aimed as an extremely ambitious franchise resurrection. Sadly, the original devs left and the project collapsed into abject mediocrity.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: The voice of Sumner in Gauntlet Legends and Gauntlet Dark Legacy is Doug Lawrence, the voice of many Nickelodeon characters, such as Filburt the Turtle and Plankton.
  • Limited Special Collectors' Ultimate Edition: The Nintendo 64 version of Gauntlet Legends came with a Warrior miniature.
  • Money, Dear Boy: Why four players? Four players at one arcade machine means four players giving it quarters. No, seriously, Ed Logg has admitted this was the reason. Some companies at the time were trying to increase profit by increasing the price from 25 cents to 50, but this was an instant turn-off to players, and allowing more than one player at 25 cents each per play was much more profitable. While this is, of course, the reason behind any multiplayer arcade game, Gauntlet started the trend.
    • Logg also added a patch that would reduce the amount of available food if less than three players were using the machine, thus encouraging more players. Ain't capitalism great?
  • Write What You Know: Before working for Atari, Ed Logg was getting into trouble with his boss for pursuing his hobby - designing video games - on company time. He did a lot better when this was his job.
