Basic Trope: A location, usually the setting of a work, is sentient.

  • Straight: The city that Alice and Bob live in is sentient.
  • Exaggerated: The entire universe is sentient.
  • Downplayed: Only a small area of Alice's house is sentient.
  • Justified: A spell was cast on the place.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Alice and Bob refer to their city as "she", but this turns out to be an actual way to refer to places sometimes.
  • Double Subverted: The city is actually sentient.
  • Parodied: The city gets "angry" and things happen when referred to as "it".
  • Zig Zagged:
  • Averted: There are no sentient locations in the work.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Wow, this city seems like it's really ALIVE!"
  • Invoked:
  • Exploited: Alice and Bob get the city to make things happen in their favor.
  • Defied: Alice and Bob move to a city that is not sentient.
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
