  • Shocking Swerve: Picoult spends the whole novel setting up for Charlotte's losing her lawsuit. This makes the final verdict shocking, but not in the way Picoult intended. Also, Willow drowns at the end of the book.
  • The Woobie - Willow is designed to be this, but many characters suffer significantly throughout the novel, including Sean, Piper, Amelia, and everyone around them.
