  • Broken Base: The show's pretty much split the audience in half since its airing. On the hand, it's a pretty good Western. On the other hand, the show's potential has been squandered and the writing and characterizations are dull. It doesn't help that the social issues are soft-pedalled in contrast with how racist the actual period was.
  • Complete Monster: Toole is a racist asshole Smug Snake with basically no redeeming qualities.
    • Johnson was arguably worse.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: The Swede
  • Fridge Brilliance: The Swede is always eating whenever he interrogates Cullen. Why? Because he was starved near to death at Andersonville. It's as much about trying to regain the life he lost during the war as it is about intimidation.
  • Ho Yay: between Cullen and Elam, hell, the end of "Revelations" even has them riding off into the sunset together.
  • Special Effect Failure: Cullen finds a photograph where the face of the man who ordered his wife hanged is blurred out, in what is clearly a cheap Photoshop effect rather than any of the issues affecting photography at the time.
