Missile Command/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Port Overdosed: Aside from its numerous console/computer ports, it's hard to name an Atari compilation in which Missile Command isn't included.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The cities were originally based on California cities due to Creator Provincialism. This was dropped so it would resonate more with a wider audience. Without being told what the cities were, people considered the cities to be ones they were familiar with, regardless of where they lived (at least if the lived in a city, perhaps with the added requirement that other cities existed not ridiculously far away).
    • The idea of reloading the missile bases by train was considered.
    • An additional set of levels involving firing back at the never-seen enemy was also dropped.
  • Working Title: The game was originally supposed to be called Armageddon, which was a cool name that did a admirable job of hammering home the point of the game. Or at least, it would have if it wasn't for the fact that virtually no-one knew what that word meant at the time. Virtually no-one knew how to spell it at the time either, which also didn't improve the prospects of it being released under that title.
