Bad Luck Bogus

Written by Tony Marino

First Act

Bogus receives a visit from Brattus, who warns him of unforeseen danger heading his way. This all proves true when Bogus, while attempting to get rid of someone that he did not want to see again, accidentally breaks the bathroom mirror while getting rid of the bystander. As a result, Brattus tells Bogus that a broken mirror results in 7 years bad luck, but Bogus refuses to believe it. However, this all changes after a series of incidents involving getting whacked by a sentient tube of toothpaste, slipping on a bar of soap, inadvertently putting out a barbecue grill that was cooking some steaks, and getting squashed by a falling tree branch when he tries to catch it.

To make matters even worse, the broken bathroom mirror allows a huge and ugly lookalike of Bogus to enter the house and start going after Bogus, humiliating him in each and every way possible. After Bogus catches up on what is happening, he is able to make quick work of the evil clone by literally blowing him away, and back into the broken mirror where he came from. When that is over, Bogus proclaims his stroke of good luck, even in spite of the bad luck that was following him, but not before he slips on the soap once again.

Second Act

Bogus has become engaged in a game of Tug-Of-War over a candy bar against Ratty and Mole. Even in spite of this disadvantage, Bogus manages to use his wits to trick Ratty and Mole into lowering their guard, which allows him to lay claim to the candy bar and eat it in just a few bites. When Ratty and Mole try to scare Bogus, Bogus claims that he's not scared, before literally being scared off by his shadow, when it acquires a scary shape.

Ratty and Mole, dressed as wizards, attempt to pull off a Rube Goldberg Device on Bogus, who is in the midst of enjoying a huge sandwich. After the first attempt literally falls apart, the two villainous rodents manage to set off the device, but Bogus (after finishing eating the sandwich), having anticipated what his two enemies try to do, counters back against them. In the second attempt to get back at Bogus, Ratty and Mole prepare a potion, which Mole accidentally lands into after jumping up into the air in surprise when Bogus frightened both him and Ratty after sneaking up behind them and popping a balloon with a needle. This results in Mole taking off like a rocket and zooming all over the attic, due to the effects of the potion.

In the third and final attempt, Ratty and Mole then use black magic to bring the ugly Bogus clone back, so that he can take his revenge out on Bogus. The clone then goes into Tommy's bedroom, where Bogus is playing a racing game on the computer and apparently captures Bogus. However, before he can throw Bogus into the trash, he is interrupted by Bogus who had once again anticipated the whole thing. Turned out that the clone had actually captured a crudely-done dummy of Bogus to trick him. Bogus then outsmarts the clone again, this time, by sending him into the computer dimension.

Third Act

Nightfall has approached the neighborhood, and Bogus is having a dance party with two of his toy friends, unaware that the Bogus clone is watching him from inside the computer. The clone then sends his minions to damage the radio that the music is playing on, prompting Bogus to play doctor for the radio and fix it up (but not before helping himself to a slice of cake). While this is going on, this gives the clone a chance to escape the computer and the house before approaching the power lines and knocking them down, causing the power to go out in the house. However, it doesn't stop there, as the clone knocks down a whole string of power lines, causing a major blackout all over the world.

While in the dark, Bogus is now determined to find out the cause of the power outage, so that he can put a stop to it (while entertaining himself with some shadow puppets for a few seconds). At first, Bogus suspects Ratty and Mole to be behind the whole thing, but once he learns that they had nothing to do with the power failure and that the evil clone is the one to blame, Bogus discovers the clone wreaking havoc in town. Using his unorthodox wits and his Bogus tactics, Bogus is able to restore power all over the world again, which causes the clone to realize that he's powerless now that the power lines are back up and he's discovered by all the people he tormented earlier.

The clone then quickly retreats back to the computer dimension that he had been sent to earlier. Bogus feels proud of himself for saving the day once again, but not before accidentally knocking down one of the power lines once again.

Tropes

  • Balloon Belly: This happens to Bogus while he was in the midst of eating the Dagwood Sandwich, however, it's not until after he swallows the second layer of the sandwich that his belly becomes bulged for a few seconds.
  • Big No: Bogus gives off one of these, after the power goes out in the house.
  • Dagwood Sandwich: Bogus helps himself to one of these, but it's subverted as he actually eats it one layer at a time with a fork instead of devouring the entire sandwich in one bite.
  • Expy: The villain of the episode looks something like a strange cross between Bogus, The Incredible Hulk, the Michelin Man, and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
  • Humiliation Conga: Bogus was on the receiving end of one of these throughout most of the episode; first he gets whacked by a tube of toothpaste, slips on a bar of soap, accidentally puts out a barbecue grill when he thought that it was a fire, gets squashed when attempting to catch a falling tree branch, the volume of the TV gets turned up too high and blasts him back a few feet, gets thrown into a glass by the clone, then winds up hitting the floor when attempting to jump onto the couch.
  • Impossible Shadow Puppets: Bogus does this while trying to figure out the power outage caused by the evil clone.
  • Look Behind You!: Bogus pulls this trick on Ratty and Mole, scoring him a victory as well as claiming the candy bar all three were fighting over.
  • Squashed Flat: This happens to Bogus when attempting to catch a falling tree branch.
  • Surprise Jump: Mole falls victim to this, after Bogus surprises both him and Ratty by popping a balloon.
