Hachiman Hikigaya is a cynical, cynical young man.He is asked to a report about "his high school life" and the result is so depressing that his teacher Shizuka decides to do something about his situation. Basically, she forces him to join a club whose function is helping the other students. The only other member of the club is Yukino Yukinoshita, that is beautiful and smart, but somehow seems to be as lonely and cynical as Hikigaya is. Soon they are joined in by Yui Yuigahama, who is well more lively than the other two but have her own kind of problems. Together, they try to help the problems other students face.
