New Super Mario Bros. 2/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • And the Fandom Rejoiced: You don't say...
    • The return of the non-tanooki Raccoon Tail is this for both nostalgic value (as it's even more iconic than the 3D Land-featured Tanooki Suit) and gameplay value (it doesn't simply slow your fall this time, it flies).
    • The flying powerup's comeback comes alongside the obligatory P-Charge bar, on the bottom-left corner of the screen as it was back in the Super Mario Bros 3 days.
    • This game was released at retail and the Nintendo eShop simultaneously, making it the first major Nintendo title to ever have a digital release.
    • Looks like Reznor's Bus Came Back. About time!
    • The Koopalings have returned once again, and they're here to stay.
  • Anticlimax Boss: Bowser goes down like a chump both phases. The second especially stands out because normal Bowser's hammers at least come out fast and can catch a new player off-guard. Giant Bowser however has attacks that are very easy to lead and dodge, and beating him simply boils down to scaling an autoscrolling tower and dodging both his hilariously slow claw swipes and the occasional non-threatening hazard. Dry Bowser is just as easy despite being the Bonus Boss.
  • Author's Saving Throw: Fans of the Koopalings that were bitter about them falling on the wayside for years were happy to see them yet again. And unlike in Wii, the contentious Bowser Jr. isn't around to bark orders at them despite their seniority.
  • Broken Base: The game's absurd lack of difficulty is a hotly-debated topic to this day. It has its fans who still find it to be a fun and satisfying experience despite, or perhaps because of its easiness, but just as many people view the lack of challenge boring and mindless.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: The return of Reznor was very well-received, thanks to their relative obscurity and uniqueness as minibosses.
  • Fan Nickname: New Super Mario Bros. 2: Six Million Golden Coins [1]
    • Hilarious in Hindsight: in an odd, not to mention interesting, shorter-than-usual-time-gap instance of this trope, there's the official announcement - the game's "ultimate goal" is getting one million golden coins.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks: There's no denying that this has been a problem plaguing the New Super Mario Bros series since Wii, and this game in particular is often hit with accusations of being "NSMB Wii, but with a coin fetish".
  • That One Boss: If you decide not to stomp him the second he pops out of his shell after each hit, Ludwig can be surprisingly tough. This is mainly due to him changing his strategy after taking his second hit: he begins swinging wildly from the chain he grabs onto, and you need perfect timing to hit him via launching yourself from a cannon. Miss, and you're 90% likely to smack into the wall of spells he shoots on your way down.

  1. Explanation It's really, REALLY easy to get a bunch of coins in this game...
