Article description: (description ) This attribute controls the content of the description and og:description elements. | The Republic of the Philippines is a democratic state in the Western Pacific. This chain of 7,107 islands (divided into three main island groups - Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) is the third most-populous English speaking country with Malay and Aeta roots. Many religions are present in the population, a huge number being Catholics, Aglipayans (an independent offshoot of Catholicism with Filipino nationalist fervour named after its co-founder Gregorio Aglipay; it is formally known as the Philippine Independent Church or Iglesia Filipina Independiente), Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists, Animists, and Hindus. Its independence was announced in 1946, though 1896 is celebrated as the year the country first gained said independence. |
