Rose Madder/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Anvilicious: Some might think that the novel tries too hard to portray violence against women as bad. It should be noted, however, that, Normal Daniels also abuses other men as well.
  • Complete Monster: Norman Daniels. Let's see, first, he makes his wife's life a living hell for fourteen years, including raping her with a tennis racket and causing her to miscarry by beating her. Then, when Rosie finally gathers up the courage to leave, he tries to track her down - not because he's sorry for mistreating her and wants to reconcile, but because he wants to punish her for stealing his debit card and for daring to leave him. To accomplish this goal, he abused his authority as a police officer and murders anyone who has helped Rose, but not before torturing them to get information about her. He also murders two police officers assigned to protect Rose and beats up her new boyfriend. When he finally meets his grisly end, it's impossible to feel any sympathy for him.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Before the events of the book, Norman has crossed this line.
