** Under at least some interpretations of the Geneva Conventions that action was actually legal - if there is no possible way you can take prisoners without suicidally compromising your own safety, then you are not obligated to take any.
** Also, the Russians in question were not 'merely' prisoners but had been caught red-handed in the act of committing war crimes, specifically, murder and rape of civilians.
